How firm should a mini Pilates ball be?

by Service, Training and Support·September 28, 2026

For a squeeze exercise, a mini Pilates ball should allow the controlled compression your instructor requests while holding enough shape for the setup. It should not need to feel rigid. Follow the exact product's inflation instructions and adjust for the movement; there is no single firmness setting that suits every mini ball and exercise.

We recommend checking how the ball behaves in the intended setup instead of inflating it until it looks as full as possible. A ball that feels comfortable in your hands may still need a different adjustment for another permitted use.

Should a mini Pilates ball be soft or firm?

Start with what the movement requires. If the instructor asks you to compress the ball, you need room for that compression. If the ball is being used for positioning, confirm both the product's permitted use and the setup before applying weight.

Use these observations to decide what to ask or adjust. They are practical checks, not a pressure rating or a substitute for the product instructions.

Is there a recommended PSI or percentage of inflation?

We do not recommend guessing a PSI or applying a rule such as “80% full” to every mini ball. Without a product-specific definition, a percentage does not tell you how much air to add or what the finished ball should feel like.

For example, some stability ball inflation instructions direct users to adjust firmness and seal the plug; that instruction sheet does not specify a PSI. The Storm Gray Inflatable Ball is a model intended for varying inflation levels according to use.

Those instructions apply to those products. If your own ball specifies a pressure, diameter limit, or other inflation requirement, follow it rather than a general online rule.

How to adjust firmness before a session

  1. Identify the ball and its inflation method. Check its instructions and use the designated straw, pump, or valve attachment. Do not assume that an accessory used with another ball is compatible.
  2. Adjust while the ball is unloaded. Add or release a small amount of air using the product's instructions, then close it securely.
  3. Check the intended action. For a squeeze exercise, try the gentle compression your instructor demonstrates. For another use, confirm the appropriate setup before applying load.
  4. Change one thing at a time. Reassess after a small adjustment. If inflation changes do not solve the problem, check the ball size or ask your instructor about the placement.

For questions about diameter, see our mini Pilates ball size guide. Adding air is not a reliable way to turn the wrong-size prop into the right one.

Compare inflation methods before choosing a ball.

Even products called “small exercise balls” can use different inflation systems. This comparison focuses on adjustment methods, not a ranking of performance or exercise difficulty.

Why does my mini ball lose air when I remove the straw?

A straw-and-plug opening must be sealed after inflation. Have the plug ready and follow the product's closing sequence. Merrithew's instructions, for example, describe covering the opening during the changeover and fully seating the plug.

A brief escape of air during that changeover is different from a ball that continues to soften after it is closed. Check the plug and inspect the ball for damage. If it will not maintain its setting, ask the supplier for help rather than repeatedly topping it up during a workout.

If you need assistance with our ball, contact our team with the product name and a description of when the air loss occurs: during inflation, while closing the plug, or after sealing.

Common firmness questions

Should I keep adding air until all wrinkles disappear?

Wrinkles alone are not a reliable inflation target. New balls may initially have wrinkles or an uneven outline. Follow your own product's guidance rather than trying to create a perfectly smooth appearance with more air.

Is a firmer ball always a harder workout?

Firmness is not a standardized difficulty setting. Changing inflation changes the prop, but the effect depends on how the exercise uses it. Ask your instructor how to progress the movement instead of assuming that a harder ball means a better workout.

Can I use the same firmness for every exercise?

Do not assume so. Check the requirements when the ball's role changes. A setting selected for a controlled squeeze does not establish suitability for a weight-bearing position.

How often should I check the ball?

Check its condition and closure before use, and reassess firmness when changing the exercise. Keep it away from sharp objects and excessive heat. Do not use a ball with cuts, visible damage, or a closure that will not hold. Follow the product's care instructions.

Which ball should I choose for a routine calling for a 9-inch mini prop?

Compare the routine's requirements with our 9-inch mini fitness ball. We keep current product and ordering details on that page. Firmness should then be selected using the product instructions and your instructor's guidance.
