Commonly Used For
NMES is used by physical therapists, sports medicine practitioners, and chiropractors for muscle re-education, strength rebuilding, and recovery.

Post-Surgical Recovery (ACL & Total Knee)
After knee surgery, the quadriceps often "shut down" due to swelling and pain. NMES bypasses this inhibition to "wake up" the muscle, ensuring you start your strengthening phase weeks ahead of schedule.

Preventing Muscle Atrophy
When a limb is immobilized in a cast or brace, muscle mass can disappear rapidly. NMES maintains muscle tone and volume without requiring joint movement, protecting your hard-earned strength while you heal.

Muscle Re-education
Following trauma or neurological injury, the connection between your brain and your muscles can be disrupted. NMES provides the rhythmic contractions necessary to retrain your body how to move correctly.

Managing Muscle Spasms
Chronic tension and spasms can stall your progress. NMES helps fatigue and relax overactive muscle fibers, increasing local blood circulation and providing a window of relief for manual therapy.

Maintaining Range of Motion
Targeted stimulation helps prevent joint stiffness by keeping the surrounding musculature active and flexible, even when active exercise is limited.
Using Balego® NMES — Professional Strength, Simplified
Clinical-grade power. Dual-channel precision. No office visit required. Three steps and you're recovering.
Place the electrodes
Ensure the unit is powered OFF before applying pads.
Clean and dry your skin. Position the self-adhesive electrode pads directly over the muscle belly of your target muscle group, following your specific placement guide. Keep a minimum of 2 inches of distance between pads.
Select your program
Dual-channel output allows single or dual muscle targeting.
Turn on the device and select the pre-programmed NMES mode (e.g., muscle re-education, endurance, or spasm relief) and active channel (CH1/CH2) that aligns with your rehabilitation plan.
Dial in the intensity
Increase amplitude slowly to avoid sudden muscle spasms.
Gradually turn up the intensity from zero until you feel a firm, comfortable muscle contraction. The contraction should be clear and effective without causing pain. Begin your session as scheduled.
Adjustable ramp times deliver smooth, comfortable contractions, while the compliance meter tracks progress across every session.

FAQs
While they look similar, they serve different goals. TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) targets sensory nerves to block pain signals to the brain. NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation) targets motor nerves to create a physical muscle contraction. If your goal is to rebuild strength, prevent muscle atrophy, or "wake up" a muscle after surgery, you need the motor-level stimulation provided by NMES.
It shouldn’t be. Unlike low-end "gadgets," the Balego® unit features an Adjustable Ramp. This allows the intensity to build gradually over 1–5 seconds rather than hitting the muscle all at once, creating a smooth, rhythmic contraction that mimics natural movement. You have total control over the pulse width and frequency to ensure the sensation is strong enough to be effective, but always comfortable.
We’ve built a Patient Compliance Meter directly into the unit that tracks usage for up to 999 hours. This allows you (and your Physical Therapist) to monitor exactly how many sessions you’ve completed and for how long. It takes the guesswork out of your home exercise program, ensuring you stay on track with the clinical protocols required for a successful recovery.

The iStim EV-805 is unusual among portable TENS/EMS devices because four independently controlled channels, multiple stimulation modes, and two timer groups create more troubleshooting possibilities than a basic two-channel TENS unit.
