FAQs
What is the InTENSity Select Combo II used for?
The InTENSity Select Combo II is a portable electrotherapy device with TENS, NMES, interferential, and Russian stimulation modes. It is used for clinician-directed pain modulation and muscle stimulation programs.
Is the Select Combo II only a TENS unit?
No. It includes TENS, but it also includes NMES, Interferential, and Russian stimulation.
What is the difference between TENS and NMES?
TENS is generally used for sensory nerve stimulation and temporary pain modulation support. NMES is used to create muscle contractions for muscle activation and re-education when appropriate. For a full comparison, read Balego TENS vs. NMES.
What is interferential stimulation?
Interferential stimulation, often called IF or IFC, uses medium-frequency stimulation with a beat-frequency effect. It is often selected for broader pain-modulation style electrotherapy programs.
What is Russian stimulation?
Russian stimulation uses a medium-frequency carrier delivered in bursts. It is typically used for muscle contraction programs such as strengthening or re-education when clinically appropriate.
How many channels does it have?
The Select Combo II has two isolated channels, allowing one or two electrode-pair setups.
Is it rechargeable?
Yes. The device uses a rechargeable lithium battery pack and includes charging accessories.
Can it be used while charging?
No. Disconnect the device from the patient and do not use it while charging.
What electrodes work with the Select Combo II?
Use compatible self-adhesive electrotherapy electrodes with the correct lead-wire connection. Balego replacement options include Balego TENS/NMES/FES electrodes, DURA-STICK PLUS electrodes, and the full electrotherapy electrodes collection.
Please help! We can’t get it started; we follow the set for IF for the shoulder, and nothing is happening??
The most likely issue is that selecting IF + Shoulder + a program does not actually start the stimulation. On the Select Combo II, the output remains at 0 mA until the user presses CH1+ and/or CH2+. Each channel’s intensity must then be increased separately. Our operating guide confirms this sequence and notes that an incomplete electrode circuit can also cause a channel to remain at or reset to zero.
Here is a customer-ready response:
Absolutely—we can help. The InTENSity Select Combo II can be somewhat confusing the first time you use the IF setting because selecting IF and the Shoulder program does not automatically start the electrical output.
Please try the following:
- Ensure the unit is not connected to the charger. The Select Combo II cannot provide treatment while charging.
- Verify the electrode connections. Each active channel needs a complete pair of electrodes:
- Channel 1 lead wire → 2 electrodes
- Channel 2 lead wire → 2 electrodes, if you are using the second channel
- Push the electrode pins fully into the electrode connectors and ensure the lead-wire plug is seated firmly in the top of the unit.
- Apply the electrodes to clean, dry skin and ensure that the entire gel surface is making proper contact.
- Turn the unit on.
- Press the M/II button until IF appears on the display.
- Press the Shoulder button and select the prescribed P1, P2, or U1 program.
- This is the important step: press CH1+ to begin increasing the output on Channel 1. If you are using both channels, also press CH2+ to increase Channel 2.Start at zero and increase the intensity gradually. The IF program can be selected correctly on the screen while the actual stimulation intensity is still at 0, so nothing will be felt until the channel intensity is raised.
If you press CH1+ or CH2+ and the intensity will not increase or immediately drops back to zero, the unit is usually detecting an incomplete electrode circuit. Check:
- Both electrodes are connected to that channel.
- Electrode pins are pushed completely into the pads.
- The lead wire is fully inserted into the unit.
- The pads are firmly adhered to the skin.
- The pads are not dried out or lifting around the edges.
- The lead wire does not appear damaged.
If using only one channel, disconnect the unused lead wire rather than leaving it plugged into the unit without electrodes attached.
Also watch for a lock symbol. The controls automatically lock after approximately 20 seconds during treatment. If you see the lock symbol, press CH1− or CH2− once to unlock the controls, then make your adjustment.

If the channel intensity numbers increase normally but you still feel absolutely no stimulation, try the other lead wire/channel to help determine whether the problem is with an electrode, lead wire, or the unit itself.
For shoulder treatment, follow the electrode-placement and treatment instructions provided by your healthcare professional. The “Shoulder” button selects the device program; it does not by itself specify where the electrodes should be placed.
One detail I would emphasize to the customer is Step 7. The guide specifically says that after choosing IF and the shoulder program, the user must press the appropriate CH+ button to begin output; it also confirms that poor pad/lead contact can cause the channel to reset to zero.
Is the Select Combo II better than the Twin Stim IV?
The Select Combo II is more versatile because it adds interferential and Russian stimulation. The Twin Stim IV is a good choice when the user only needs TENS and NMES.
When should I choose the Balego four-channel stim instead?
Choose the Balego Four Channel Stim when you need four independent channels for broader coverage, multiple treatment zones, or more electrode pairs at the same time.
Why did the output stop during treatment?
The device may detect poor pad contact, a loose lead wire, or an open circuit and reset output for safety. Check the pads, lead wires, skin contact, and battery before restarting at a low intensity.
Why does the unit lock after treatment starts?
The safety lock helps prevent accidental button presses during use. Follow the manual’s unlock instructions using the channel control buttons.
