| Package level | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Electrodes in each sealed pouch | 4 |
| Sealed pouches supplied | 10 |
| Total electrodes | 40 |
| Typical dual-channel four-pad setups represented | 10 fresh sets |
The separately packaged four-electrode sets allow unused pads to remain sealed until they are needed. This is particularly useful in clinical settings where each pouch can be assigned to one patient.
Why choose a 2" × 2" electrode?
The 2-inch square format is a common general-purpose size because it provides more surface area than a small targeted electrode without requiring the space of a long rectangular pad.
| Electrode size or shape | Relative coverage | Practical fit |
|---|---|---|
| 1.25"–1.5" square | Small | Compact treatment sites and closely spaced placements |
| 2" round | Small to medium | Curved regions and smaller joints |
| 2" × 2" square | Medium | General-purpose TENS, NMES, and IFC placement |
| 2" × 3.5" rectangle | Medium to large | Broader muscles and treatment regions |
| 2" × 4" rectangle or oval | Large | Larger muscle groups and broad-area stimulation |
| Oversized back electrode | Very large | Specialized lumbar or thoracic setups |
Our TENS electrode buying guide identifies the 2" square format as a useful starting point for many everyday replacement-electrode applications.
Advantages of the square profile
A square electrode can be positioned
- Beside another pad in a two-electrode setup
- Around a painful region in a four-pad TENS arrangement
- Over a motor-point region for clinician-directed NMES
- In a crossed interferential configuration when permitted by the device
- On many common arm, shoulder, back, hip, thigh, and leg treatment sites
Placement must still follow the electrotherapy device instructions and any directions supplied by the treating healthcare professional. Richmar notes that electrode placement is an important treatment parameter and advises users to follow the prescribed location and device instructions.
How the electrode layers work
| Electrode component | Function | Practical benefit |
|---|---|---|
| White cloth backing | Provides the outer support layer | Flexible, comfortable surface that follows ordinary contours |
| Conductive carbon layer | Distributes electrical output through the pad | Helps avoid concentrating all output at the wire connection |
| Conductive hydrogel | Transfers current between the pad and skin | Provides both conductivity and adhesion |
| Full-coverage wire connection | Connects the pigtail lead across the conductive layer | Helps support durable, consistent connection |
| Pigtail socket | Receives the electrotherapy lead-wire pin | Allows connection to compatible standard-pin lead wires |
| Protective liner | Covers the gel between treatments | Helps reduce contamination and premature drying |
| Resealable pouch | Protects the stored set | Helps preserve gel moisture and cleanliness |
The flexible carbon layer, premium white cloth backing, self-adhering construction, and full-coverage wire connector are the product’s principal design features.
Compatible electrotherapy modalities
TENS
TENS generally uses sensory-level electrical stimulation for temporary pain modulation programs. The desired sensation is typically strong but comfortable tingling, pulsing, or buzzing without a forceful muscle contraction.
Browse Balego’s TENS units, electrodes, and accessories.
EMS and NMES
EMS and NMES use electrical pulses to activate motor nerves and produce a visible or palpable muscle contraction. These electrodes may be used when the stimulator accepts the connection and permits a 2" square pad.
Compare devices in our neuromuscular stimulation collection.
For a clearer explanation of treatment goals, read TENS vs. NMES: Differences, Uses, and Device Guide.
Interferential stimulation
The manufacturer identifies these pads for compatible IF or interferential applications. Confirm that the clinical or portable interferential system uses the correct lead-wire connection and permits electrodes of this size.
Other electrostimulation devices
Do not assume that every electrical-stimulation system accepts these pads. Microcurrent, FES, Russian stimulation, combination systems, clinical stimulators, and specialized devices may have different electrode or connection requirements.
Lead-wire compatibility
The electrode does not connect directly to the stimulation unit. Its pigtail socket accepts the pin at the electrode end of a compatible lead wire.
| Compatibility point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Electrode connection | The lead wire terminates in a compatible 2 mm pin |
| Device connection | The opposite plug fits the stimulator |
| Lead-wire condition | No exposed wire, cracking, looseness or intermittent output |
| Electrode size | The stimulator or clinician permits a 2" square electrode |
| Treatment modality | The electrode is appropriate for the selected stimulation mode |
| Channel setup | The correct number of electrodes is connected to each channel |
Our 45-inch TENS/NMES lead wires use a 2.35 mm device-side plug and standard 2 mm electrode pins. They fit many Richmar and portable electrotherapy devices.
These electrodes generally will not directly fit:
- Snap-style electrode cables
- Tab or clip-style leads
- Proprietary EMPI safety connectors
- Magnetic connectors
- Wireless wearable TENS systems
- Omron-style proprietary pad connections
- Conductive garments without the required adapter
- Systems with permanently attached electrode pads
For additional connector guidance, read TENS and NMES Electrode Connectors: Pigtail vs. Tab.
How to apply InTENSity electrodes
Always follow the instructions supplied with the electrotherapy device.
1. Turn the stimulator off
Set the output intensity to zero and turn the unit off before connecting, applying, repositioning, or removing the electrodes.
2. Inspect the electrodes
Do not use a pad with the following:
- Dry or visibly damaged gel
- A torn backing
- A loose pigtail connection
- A folded or permanently curled edge
- Exposed conductive material
- Dirt, lint or hair covering the gel
- Adhesion too weak to maintain complete skin contact
The electrode instructions advise inspecting the wires and adhesive before every use and immediately discarding electrodes that are damaged or no longer adhere firmly.
3. Prepare the skin
Apply electrodes to clean, dry, intact skin.
Remove:
- Lotion
- Body oil
- Sweat
- Makeup
- Topical analgesic
- Loose debris
Clean, dry skin supports more complete adhesion and consistent contact. Richmar’s electrode-placement guidance specifically directs users to apply electrodes to clean and dry skin.
4. Connect the lead wire
Insert the compatible lead-wire pin completely into the pigtail socket.
Do not pull, twist, or bend the pigtail excessively.
5. Remove the pad from its liner
Lift the electrode by the cloth edge rather than pulling on the pigtail wire.
Avoid touching the hydrogel more than necessary.
6. Apply the complete electrode
Position the pad and smooth it from the center outward. Make sure the gel surface lies flat without:
- Air pockets
- Wrinkles
- Folded corners
- Lifted edges
- Hair trapped beneath the pad
7. Begin at zero intensity
Turn on the device and gradually increase the output according to the treatment plan.
Stimulation should not feel sharply concentrated, burning, painful, or intolerable. Stop and inspect the electrode when one edge feels substantially stronger than the rest.
8. Turn the device off before removal
Reduce intensity to zero and turn the stimulator off. Never pull an electrode from the skin while stimulation remains active.
9. Return the pad to the liner
Peel the electrode slowly from its cloth edge and place the gel side back onto its original protective liner.
10. Reseal the pouch
Return all four electrodes to their pouch and close it securely.
Electrode life and reuse
These electrodes may be reused up to 15 times. That is a maximum under suitable conditions—not a guarantee that every set will last for exactly 15 treatments.
Actual life varies according to the following:
- Skin cleanliness
- Skin oil
- Perspiration
- Body hair
- Frequency of use
- Treatment duration
- Handling of the hydrogel
- Storage temperature
- Exposure to air
- Dust and lint
- Body location
- Edge movement
- Intensity and treatment setup
Replace the electrodes when adhesion or electrical comfort declines, even when fewer than 15 applications have occurred.
When should the pads be replaced?
Replace a set when:
- An electrode does not remain completely attached.
- One or more corners repeatedly lift.
- The hydrogel has dried.
- The gel is dirty, uneven, or contaminated.
- The backing is torn.
- The pigtail connector is loose.
- Stimulation feels sharper or more concentrated.
- Output becomes weak or intermittent.
- Skin irritation develops.
- The pad has been used by another person.
A worn pad may still look usable while providing incomplete contact. Poor contact can produce an uneven sensation and may increase the likelihood of skin irritation.
Electrode size safety
Use the same electrode size originally supplied with the device unless another size is approved by the clinician or device instructions.
- A smaller electrode can increase current concentration and the chance of irritation or burns.
- A substantially larger electrode may reduce perceived stimulation, prompting the user to increase intensity unnecessarily.
- Replacement electrodes should match the original size or the healthcare professional’s recommendation.
Whenever changing electrode size, brand, gel type, or placement, return the intensity to zero and readjust gradually.
Should additional electrode gel be used?
Normally, no.
These are self-adhering pre-gelled electrodes. Adding electrode gel, water, lotion, or another contact medium may:
- Reduce adhesion
- Make the electrode slide
- Contaminate the existing hydrogel
- Cause uneven contact
- Shorten useful life
Separate conductive gel is more appropriate for non-gelled carbon-rubber electrodes. Customers who need that type of setup can compare our non-gelled carbon electrodes.
Care and storage
After each treatment:
- Turn off the stimulator.
- Remove each pad by its cloth edge.
- Avoid pulling the pigtail connector.
- Return the pads to the original liner.
- Place the complete set in its pouch.
- Seal the pouch.
- Store according to the package directions.
- Keep the set assigned to one person.
Do not:
- Wash or soak the pad.
- Scrape the hydrogel.
- Clean it with alcohol or solvent.
- Leave it uncovered between treatments.
- Store it in direct sunlight.
- Fold the electrode.
- Cut the pad into another shape.
- Share it between patients.

FAQs
How many electrodes are included?
The package contains 40 electrodes: 10 sealed pouches with four pads in each pouch.
What size are the pads?
Each electrode measures 2" × 2", approximately 5.1 × 5.1 cm.
Are these reusable?
Yes. They can be reused up to 15 times. Actual service life varies, and the pads should be replaced earlier when they are dirty, damaged, dry, uncomfortable, or unable to adhere completely.
Why did the previous page say 5–10 uses?
That was a conservative estimate in the Balego copy. The current manufacturer specification states up to 15 uses, so the product table and FAQ should be updated to reflect the documented maximum while explaining that results vary.
What connector do they use?
Balego lists a standard 2 mm female pigtail socket. It accepts a compatible male electrode pin at the end of the lead wire.
Will these fit every TENS unit?
No. They fit many devices using standard 2 mm pin leads, but they will not directly fit proprietary snap, tab, magnetic, wireless, EMPI safety, or Omron-style connections.
Can they be used with the Balego TENS unit?
They may be used when the Balego device and its lead wires terminate in compatible standard 2 mm electrode pins. Always check both the device-side and electrode-side connections.
Can they be used with NMES?
Yes, when the NMES or EMS device accepts the connector and permits a 2" square electrode. Richmar lists this electrode family for EMS applications.
Can they be used for interferential stimulation?
Yes, with compatible interferential equipment and lead wires. The manufacturer includes IF among the supported applications.
Are these snap electrodes?
No. They use a pigtail socket rather than a metal snap.
Do they require separate electrode gel?
No additional gel is normally required. Conductive adhesive hydrogel is already incorporated into the pad.
Can the pads be cut?
No. Cutting changes the conductive surface area and may create uneven current distribution or expose internal materials.
Can several patients share a pouch?
No. Once opened and used, a reusable set should remain assigned to one patient.
Why does stimulation sometimes feel sharper with an old pad?
Dryness, contamination, lifted edges, or partial adhesion can reduce the effective contact area and concentrate the sensation. Turn off the device, inspect the electrode, and replace it when full contact cannot be restored.
Why does a fresh electrode sometimes feel stronger?
A fresh hydrogel surface may provide more complete contact than an older pad. More consistent contact can make the same device setting feel more distinct.
Should the skin be cleaned with alcohol?
Follow the device and electrode instructions. The principal requirement is clean, dry, intact skin without lotion, oil, or sweat. Allow any permitted cleanser to evaporate fully before applying the pad.
Can the electrodes be applied over topical pain cream?
No. Topical creams, oils, lotions, and analgesic products may interfere with adhesion and electrical contact.
Can the pads be used in water?
No. Do not operate electrotherapy equipment in a shower, bath, swimming pool, or other wet environment.
What if the electrode will not stick?
Clean and dry the skin, check for lotion or hair, and inspect the gel. Replace the pad when it remains loose or repeatedly lifts.
What if one channel does not work?
Check:
- The device intensity
- Lead-wire connection at the stimulator
- Both electrode pins
- Pad adhesion
- Lead-wire condition
- Electrode condition
Substitute a known-good lead or electrode set to identify whether the problem is the pad, wire, or device.
