Our Balego® TENS/NMES/FES electrodes use hydrogel that contains no natural latex protein. For customers asking about latex-free TENS pads, this is the specific material statement we can share, together with its source.
The hydrogel is the adhesive, conductive layer that contacts the skin. Understanding its latex documentation helps answer a different question from choosing a pad size, connector, or package quantity: what does the supplier actually say about the material touching your skin?
What does our supplier's latex documentation say?
A section titled “Latex Free Certification” on page 4. Its statement reads:
“All of the hydrogels produced by Covidien contain no natural latex protein.”
Source: Hydrogels brochure, page 4 (PDF), document H6454 1M 08/09, © Covidien. The document is hosted by Cardinal Health.
We use this supplier documentation to explain the hydrogel in our reusable electrode line. The documentation also describes testing of skin-contact hydrogels for cytotoxicity, skin irritation, and sensitization under ISO 10993. Those are separate material-evaluation topics; they do not mean that every person will tolerate every electrode.
The scope is the hydrogel. This is not a lot-specific declaration covering the finished electrode, connector, backing, and retail packaging. If you need confirmation for all of those components, contact our team with the item number and lot information so we can help identify the documentation needed.
What does “latex-free” mean when comparing TENS pads?
The wording and the component it describes matter. A statement about electrode gel should be read at that scope, while a statement covering an entire product and its packaging answers a broader purchasing question.
| Statement | What it tells you | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrogel contains no natural latex protein. | The supplier makes a material statement about the gel. | Whether that documentation applies to the gel in the electrode you are ordering. |
| Not made with natural rubber latex | A manufacturing-material statement, when supported for the identified product or component. | Whether it covers the electrode, packaging, or both. |
| Sensitive-skin or hypoallergenic description | A skin-tolerance claim that needs its own supporting information. | The specific formulation and evidence are not interchangeable with a latex statement. |
FDA labeling guidance recommends the wording “not made with natural rubber latex” when supported, rather than an absolute latex-free claim. We quote the older brochure accurately and identify the material it addresses; we do not interpret it as a guarantee that a finished product has no possible allergen exposure.
Does latex-free hydrogel mean an electrode cannot irritate skin?
No. A latex statement addresses a particular material concern. It does not establish that an electrode is allergy-proof, suitable for every person with sensitive skin, or free from every ingredient someone may react to.
If you have a diagnosed latex allergy or a previous reaction to adhesive pads, ask your healthcare professional to review the exact product and the available material documentation before use. Changing to a different brand, color, or backing does not by itself establish suitability.
If skin becomes itchy, irritated, or red during TENS use, switch the device off and remove the pads. Ask a healthcare professional about the reaction before using them again. Our material information supports product selection; it does not diagnose the cause of a skin reaction.
How does the gel differ across our electrode options?
Our electrode range includes several gel constructions. The comparison below separates the documented hydrogel statement discussed here from other product features, so a gel name or backing material is not mistaken for latex documentation.
| Electrode option | Listed gel construction | How to evaluate the latex question |
|---|---|---|
| Our Balego TENS/NMES/FES electrodes | Reusable hydrogel with a carbon-film conductor and spun-lace backing. | The supplier brochure discussed here supports our hydrogel-specific statement. Request additional documentation if you need finished product and packaging confirmation. |
| Classic electrodes | Aloe hydrogel with soft foam backing and silver/carbon construction. | An aloe or foam description does not answer the latex question. Check documentation for the exact Classic item. |
| 696SS Superior Silver electrodes | PolyHesive™ Blue Gel with silver/carbon construction. | A blue-gel or sensitive-skin description does not establish latex status. Ask for the statement applicable to 696SS / EP85205. |
This comparison does not imply that the other electrodes contain latex. It shows why each product's documentation should be checked on its own. For the broader selection process, use our TENS electrode buying guide.
What should a clinic request for its electrode records?
A useful materials record connects the item being purchased to the statement being relied on. When you contact us, include:
- The exact electrode: product name, selected size, and item number from the pouch or order.
- The scope you need: hydrogel only, the complete electrode, the packaging, or all three.
- The lot number, if available: useful when a request concerns inventory already received.
- Your documentation requirement: for example, a supplier materials statement or a current signed declaration for a purchasing file.
Keep the document date with the statement. The 2009 hydrogel brochure supplies the wording cited in this article; its age should remain visible when it is used in a product review.
Does using the pads for NMES or FES change the latex question?
The material question concerns the electrode being used, rather than the stimulation mode. Our supplier statement about the hydrogel does not become broader because the same permitted electrode is used with TENS, NMES, or FES.
Device compatibility still needs a separate check. Follow your equipment instructions and clinician's directions, and use our electrode connector guide if you need help identifying the connection.
Choose our electrodes with the material information in hand.

For a materials question before ordering, contact us about the exact electrode you need. We can help distinguish the hydrogel information available here from a request for more comprehensive product documentation.
