Chattanooga® Continuum™ Portable TENS and NMES Stimulator (2600-KIT)

The Chattanooga® Continuum™ is a portable, prescription electrical-stimulation system combining TENS for clinician-directed pain-management programs with NMES for muscle contraction, activation, and neuromuscular re-education.

Its distinctive 1+1 channel design allows the two output channels to be managed independently. A clinician can select the same program for both channels or operate two different programs at the same time. This makes the continuum particularly useful when a rehabilitation plan combines sensory stimulation with active exercise, muscle activation, or task-specific movement.

The Continuum includes 13 preset regimens and two customizable regimens across its TENS and NMES functions. Treatment time, waveform, pulse rate, pulse duration, cycling pattern, off time, ramp time, and contraction time can be adjusted by the clinician according to the treatment plan.

The Chattanooga Continuum should be selected, programmed and used under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional. The product is reserved for healthcare professionals, although a properly instructed patient may use it at home as part of a prescribed program.

For complete operating instructions, read our Chattanooga Continuum User Guide.

What Does “1+1 Function” Mean?

Most portable dual-channel stimulators apply one selected mode across both channels. The Continuum gives the clinician more control by treating each channel as a separate programmable output.

Channel setupPossible use
Same program on both channelsBilateral muscles or a larger treatment area
Different NMES programsTwo muscle groups requiring different stimulation parameters
Different TENS programsTwo painful areas requiring different sensory patterns
TENS on one channel and NMES on the otherPain-focused sensory stimulation alongside muscle activation
One active channelFocused two-electrode treatment
Two active channelsFour-electrode or dual-region treatment

This independent operation is the Continuum’s central differentiator. The Chattanooga device has channels that can use the same program or two different programs simultaneously, allowing one device to support electrotherapy across multiple stages of rehabilitation.

TENS and NMES in One Device

TENS and NMES both deliver current through surface electrodes, but they are intended to produce different responses.

NMES indications

The cleared NMES indications include the following:

  • Retarding or preventing disuse atrophy
  • Maintaining or increasing range of motion
  • Re-educating muscles
  • Relaxation of muscle spasms
  • Increasing local blood circulation
  • Prevention of venous thrombosis of the calf muscles immediately after surgery

The last indication is a specialized postoperative application and should only be used under an appropriate medical order and protocol.

TENS indications

The cleared TENS indications include the following:

  • Symptomatic relief and management of chronic, intractable pain
  • Adjunctive treatment for post-surgical and post-traumatic acute pain
  • Relief of pain associated with arthritis

TENS provides symptomatic support; it does not cure arthritis, repair injured tissue, or eliminate the underlying cause of pain.

Functional electrical stimulation indication

The underlying clearance also includes stimulation of leg and ankle muscles in partially paralyzed patients to assist foot flexion and gait. The optional heel switch is intended to help coordinate muscle stimulation with the walking cycle during clinician-directed functional rehabilitation.

Thirteen Preset Regimens and Two Custom Programs

The Continuum includes 13 manufacturer-programmed regimens plus two custom regimen slots.

The preset and customizable options cover:

  • Large-muscle NMES
  • Small-muscle NMES
  • TENS Simple Modulated Pulse
  • TENS modulation programs
  • Clinician-selected symmetrical waveforms
  • Clinician-selected asymmetrical waveforms
  • Continuous or cycled stimulation
  • Adjustable treatment duration
  • Adjustable pulse rate
  • Adjustable pulse duration
  • Adjustable ramp time
  • Adjustable contraction time
  • Adjustable relaxation or off time

The clinician can program the device and limit the patient’s ability to alter selected parameters, helping a home program remain consistent with the prescribed setup. 13 presets and two customizable programs.

Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical Waveforms

Waveform typeGeneral characteristicPotential programming role
Symmetrical biphasicPositive and negative phases have similar shape and chargeCommonly selected for comfortable muscle stimulation
Asymmetrical biphasicThe two phases differ in shape while remaining charge balancedMay provide a different sensory or motor response
Clinician-selected optionChosen according to the program and patient responseSupports customized TENS or NMES treatment

The presence of both waveform options does not mean one is universally stronger or better. The clinician should choose the waveform, pulse settings, and intensity that produce the intended sensory response or muscle contraction.

Large-Muscle vs. Small-Muscle NMES

The Continuum identifies separate large-muscle and small-muscle NMES regimen categories. Both are intended to provide controlled neuromuscular stimulation, but the programming is adapted to different muscle sizes and rehabilitation goals.

Program categoryTypical consideration
Large-muscle NMESQuadriceps, hamstrings, gluteal muscles and other larger muscle groups
Small-muscle NMESSmaller upper- or lower-extremity muscles
IntensityRaised until an effective, tolerable contraction is produced
Electrode sizeSelected according to muscle size and placement area
Rest timeAdjusted to help manage fatigue
Voluntary exerciseMay be coordinated with the contraction when prescribed

Program selection alone does not guarantee a useful contraction. Electrode placement, pad size, intensity, muscle position, and active patient participation all affect the response.

Strong but Comfortable Muscle Contractions

The Continuum’s balanced waveforms are capable of producing strong muscle stimulation while limiting the sharp or spiking sensation associated with less comfortable waveforms. This may allow a patient to tolerate a higher therapeutic intensity when an effective contraction is the goal.

An NMES contraction should be

  • Clearly visible or palpable
  • Directed to the intended muscle
  • Strong enough to meet the prescribed goal
  • Tolerable for the programmed contraction time
  • Followed by sufficient rest

The stimulation should be reduced or stopped if it becomes sharp, burning, or painful or produces an unintended movement.

Included Hand Switch

The 2630 Continuum Hand Switch is included with the 2600-KIT.

The handheld remote can activate stimulation without pressing buttons on the main device. It may be operated by:

  • The treating clinician
  • The patient
  • A caregiver following the treatment plan

This is useful when stimulation must be coordinated with a repeated exercise, movement, or functional task.

Hand-switch applicationPractical benefit
Clinician-triggered contractionAllows observation of movement from a short distance
Patient-triggered contractionLets the patient coordinate stimulation with voluntary effort
Repeated functional taskImproves timing consistency

Does the Chattanooga Continuum provide Russian stimulation? Which unit is best for quadriceps Russian stimulation with a 5:1 cycle, and what electrode size should I use on the thigh?

The Chattanooga Continuum does not provide true Russian stimulation. The Continuum provides TENS and NMES, including programmable NMES for larger muscle groups like the quadriceps, but it does not produce the traditional 2,500 Hz burst-modulated Russian waveform. Some of Chattanooga’s larger professional clinic systems do include Russian stimulation, which likely explains why your physical therapist’s Chattanooga office unit can provide it.

If your therapist specifically wants you to continue with Russian stimulation for the quadriceps, our best portable choice is the InTENSity Select Combo II DI2195. It has a dedicated RUSS (Russian stimulation) mode using a 2,500 Hz carrier and provides two independently adjustable output channels.

The Select Combo II also has a customizable U1 Russian program that lets you adjust the contraction time, relaxation time, and ramp time. This is particularly useful when trying to reproduce a physical therapist’s quadriceps-strengthening protocol.

If by a “5:1 cycle” your therapist means five parts rest for every one part contraction—for example, a 10-second contraction followed by 50 seconds of relaxation—the Select Combo II can accommodate that timing. Its custom Russian program allows approximately 5–30 seconds of contraction and 5–60 seconds of relaxation, along with adjustable ramp timing.

Because different clinical stimulators sometimes describe a “5:1” ratio in opposite ways, we recommend asking your therapist to write down the exact contraction time, relaxation time, ramp time, and, if applicable, burst frequency used on the Chattanooga office unit. You can then match those values as closely as possible on the portable unit instead of relying on the “5:1” description alone.

For quadriceps or thigh stimulation, we generally recommend a larger rectangular electrode rather than a small pad. A 2" × 4" rectangular electrode is an excellent starting size for an adult thigh because the larger surface area distributes the stimulation over a broader area and can be more comfortable when a strong muscle contraction is required. Our Starburst Electrodes are specifically well suited to larger muscle groups such as the thigh. We also offer several other sizes through our TENS/NMES/FES electrode selection

The Select Combo II includes four 2" × 2" electrodes, and those may also be appropriate if that is the size and placement your therapist prefers. Each active channel requires two electrodes, so a two-channel quadriceps setup can use four electrodes when prescribed. Electrode position is just as important as electrode size, so we recommend having your physical therapist show you the exact quadriceps/motor-point placement used during your successful clinic treatment.

If your therapist does not require the Russian waveform specifically, the Chattanooga Continuum can still produce strong, programmable quadriceps contractions using NMES. However, conventional NMES and Russian stimulation are different waveforms, so the continuum should not be described as providing Russian current.

Is the heel switch included?

No. Part 2645 is an optional accessory sold separately.

What is the heel switch used for?

It can trigger muscle stimulation from inside the shoe during clinician-directed gait and drop-foot rehabilitation.

Does the kit include electrodes?

The current official Chattanooga kit-content list does not identify electrodes. Balego should confirm its present carton configuration before promising that pads are included.

Does the kit include batteries?

Two AA batteries are required, but they are not named in the current official kit content list. Confirm the Balego carton before publication.

What kind of electrode connection does it use?

The kit includes a set of pin cables. Replacement electrode sockets must match those pins.

Is the Continuum FDA-approved?

The accurate term is FDA 510(k) cleared. The current Chattanooga Continuum listing references K093324.

Is Chattanooga Continuum the same as Empi Continuum?

FDA’s current listing connects the Chattanooga Continuum to K093324, which was originally cleared under the Empi Continuum name. The current product is sold under the Chattanooga brand.

Where is the Continuum made?

The official Chattanooga product sheet states that it is designed and assembled in the USA.

Can it be used at home?

Yes, when it has been prescribed, programmed, and explained by a qualified healthcare professional.

Does the Continuum provide IFC or Russian stimulation?

No. The current Chattanooga product is marketed as a TENS and NMES system. Consider the InTENSity Select Combo II when IFC and Russian stimulation are also required.
