iStim EV-805 Troubleshooting Guide: Q&A for No Output, Pads, Channels & Settings

The iStim EV-805 is unusual among portable TENS/EMS devices because four independently controlled channels, multiple stimulation modes, and two timer groups create more troubleshooting possibilities than a basic two-channel TENS unit.

Most apparent EV-805 problems can be narrowed to one of five areas:

power → lead wire → electrode contact → channel intensity → programming

This guide takes a symptom-first approach so you can identify the most likely problem without working through an entire instruction manual.

For complete current specifications, package contents, and purchasing information, see the iStim EV-805 Rechargeable 4-Channel TENS/EMS Unit. For detailed explanations of electrical patterns, use our separate TENS Modes Explained guide rather than treating this troubleshooting article as a duplicate operating manual.

First Question: Which EV-805 Version Do I Have?

This step should be checked before troubleshooting the battery or charging system.

EV-805 documentation circulating online does not all describe the same power configuration.

What should I do if my manual says AA batteries?

Follow the instructions that correspond to the physical unit you actually own.

  • If your EV-805 has the AA-battery configuration described in its supplied manual, do not try to convert it into a rechargeable device.
  • If your EV-805 is the current rechargeable version with USB charging equipment, do not apply the old AA-battery instructions to it.
  • If the power configuration and manual do not match, verify the model label and contact the seller before operating or charging the device.

Why is my iStim EV-805 not turning on?

Start with the power system—and first make sure you know which EV-805 version you own.

Current rechargeable EV-805

If you own the current rechargeable EV-805, please confirm that the unit has been charged using the specified charging equipment.

  1. Confirm the unit has been charged using the charging equipment specified for it.
  2. Inspect the charging cable and connector for obvious damage.
  3. Disconnect the charging equipment before beginning treatment unless the current supplied instructions specifically permit operation while charging.
  4. Try powering the unit on again.
  5. If it still does not start after an appropriate charge, please stop troubleshooting the internal electronics and contact support.

Older AA-battery EV-805

For the older version:

  1. Confirm that four 1.5 V AA batteries are installed.
  2. Verify polarity.
  3. Replace the full battery set if voltage is low.
  4. Do not substitute rechargeable batteries when the manual for that exact device prohibits them.

Do not open the stimulator housing or attempt an internal battery repair.

Why Is the EV-805 LCD Screen Dim?

In the supplied AA-battery manual, a weakly illuminated LCD is specifically associated with a low battery.

Please replace the batteries according to the instructions provided for that configuration.

For the current rechargeable model, a dim or abnormal display should instead prompt you to verify the rechargeable power system and the instructions provided with that model.

This scenario is another reason not to troubleshoot every EV-805 using the same battery instructions.

Why Does the EV-805 Screen Work, but I Feel No Stimulation?

A working display only confirms that the control unit has power. It does not prove that a complete electrical path exists between the stimulator and your skin.

Check the active channel from beginning to end:

EV-805 output → lead wire → first electrode → skin → second electrode → lead wire

The supplied manual instructs users to connect cables while the device is off, keep intensity at zero during connection, and press electrodes firmly against the skin.

Check these items in order

  1. Is the correct channel's intensity above zero? The EV-805 has independent intensity controls. Raising Channel 1 does not raise Channels 2, 3, or 4.
  2. Are both electrodes connected to the active lead? A normal channel requires a complete electrode pair.
  3. Is the lead wire fully inserted? A partially seated plug may cause absent or intermittent output.
  4. Are the electrodes making full contact? A pad that is lifting, dry, contaminated, or damaged can interrupt the current.
  5. Is the power source depleted? The older manufacturer's troubleshooting table lists low battery as a possible reason for a normal display with no useful output.

Do not compensate for a poor electrical connection by simply increasing the intensity.

Why Does One EV-805 Channel Work but Another Does Not?

Because the EV-805 has four independently controlled channels, one working channel does not prove that every pad, lead wire, and output connection is working correctly.

The fastest approach is component isolation.

EV-805 channel-isolation test

Always turn the output down and switch the unit off before disconnecting or reconnecting components.

For more information on connectors and replacement pads, see our TENS Electrode Guides: Pads, Connectors, Lead Wires & Compatibility.

Why Does My EV-805 Feel Weak Even at a Higher Intensity?

Weak stimulation does not automatically mean the stimulator has lost output.

Dirty electrodes and improper application can cause low output.

Before raising intensity further, check:

  • Is the electrode fully adhered?
  • Is part of the hydrogel lifting away from the skin?
  • Is the skin clean and dry?
  • Is the pad worn or damaged?
  • Is the lead connection secure?
  • Is the power source adequately charged or supplied?
  • Are you adjusting the intensity of the channel that is actually connected to those pads?

A poor pad-to-skin interface can make electrical stimulation feel weaker, sharper, or less even, depending on where contact has deteriorated.

If replacement electrodes are needed, compare compatible options in Balego's TENS/NMES/FES electrodes. Confirm the connector required by your EV-805 lead wires before ordering.

What causes the EV-805 to shut off before the session is finished?

Verify the timer before assuming the unit is malfunctioning.

The EV-805 manual describes two treatment timers:

  • Left timer: Channels 1 and 2
  • Right timer: Channels 3 and 4

The timer can be adjusted from 1 to 60 minutes, with continuous operation documented in the manual.

This creates a situation that does not occur on simpler stimulators: one pair of channels may reach its programmed treatment time while the other pair continues.

If the entire unit stopped unexpectedly and the timer did not expire, check the following:

  1. Power level
  2. Electrode adhesion
  3. Lead connections
  4. Worn or dirty pads

Those are also the main causes identified in the manufacturer's original troubleshooting table for premature shutdown.

Why Did Channels 1–2 Stop While Channels 3–4 Are Still Running?

This behavior may be normal.

The EV-805 groups its four channels into two timer pairs:

TimerChannels
Left timerCH1 + CH2
Right timerCH3 + CH4

The two timers can be programmed separately.

Therefore, a session can appear to “lose” Channels 1 and 2 even though those channels have simply reached their timer setting before Channels 3 and 4.

Check both timer values before troubleshooting cables or electrodes.

Why Does the Stimulation Feel Sharp, Prickly, or Burning?

Sharp or burning stimulation is a reason to stop and inspect the setup, not a reason to keep increasing intensity.

Common contact problems include:

  • An electrode edge lifting from the skin
  • Worn or damaged hydrogel
  • Incomplete pad contact
  • A damaged lead or connector
  • Perspiration, lotion or oil beneath the pad
  • Irritated skin

Turn the stimulation down, switch the unit off, and inspect the electrode.

Pads should be applied over normal, healthy, clean, and dry skin. The manufacturer's safety instructions specifically warn against applying stimulation over broken, infected, inflamed, or otherwise compromised skin.

If an electrode repeatedly produces uncomfortable concentrated stimulation, replace it rather than trying to overcome the problem with intensity.

Why Does One Channel Feel Stronger Than Another at the Same Displayed Level?

That does not necessarily indicate a defect.

The EV-805 allows each of its four channels to be adjusted separately. Different electrode locations can have different values for:

  • Skin resistance
  • Sensitivity
  • Tissue contours
  • Electrode contact
  • Pad size
  • Proximity to superficial nerves or motor points

Therefore, four identical numbers on the display do not guarantee four identical sensations.

Adjust each active channel according to the intended response and comfort rather than trying to make every channel display the same value.

Why Doesn't TENS Make My Muscle Contract?

That may be precisely what you should expect.

The EV-805 combines two different kinds of electrical stimulation:

Mode familyIntended response
TENSPrimarily sensory stimulation
EMSMotor stimulation intended to produce muscle contraction

The manual describes TENS for temporary relief of sore and aching muscles and EMS for stimulating healthy muscles to improve or facilitate muscle performance.

If your goal is to understand the distinction rather than troubleshoot a malfunction, see the TENS vs. NMES: Differences, Uses & Device Guide.

That existing guide covers the modality decision in detail, so it does not need to be repeated here.

Why does EMS not produce a muscle contraction?

First confirm that EMS, rather than TENS, is selected.

Then check:

  1. Both pads in the channel are connected.
  2. Electrode contact is secure.
  3. The intended muscle is between or appropriately related to the electrode positions.
  4. Intensity has been increased gradually.
  5. The correct channel is being adjusted.
  6. The EMS work/rest settings are compatible with the selected mode.

The manufacturer's manual identifies three EMS modes—Constant, Synchronous, and Alternate—and documents adjustable pulse rate, pulse width, ramp, on time, and off time.

Do not continue raising intensity if you are getting a painful sensation without the intended contraction. Turn the unit off and reassess placement and electrode contact.

Why Is the Wrong Muscle Contracting During EMS?

This is usually a placement question rather than a power question.

Turn the intensity down and switch the unit off before moving electrodes.

Small changes in electrode position can change which motor nerves are recruited. The placement diagrams in the supplied manual illustrate EMS configurations for areas including the lower and upper back, shoulder, abdominal region, thighs, calves, biceps, and triceps.

Rather than duplicating every body-region diagram here, use Balego's dedicated TENS/NMES placement resources when you need region-specific positioning information.

What do B, N, M, SD1, and SD2 mean on the EV-805?

These are the five adjustable TENS patterns.

DisplayModeSimplest distinction
BBurstPulses delivered in rhythmic groups
NNormalContinuous stimulation at selected settings
MModulationPulse rate and pulse width automatically change
SD1Strength-Duration 1Intensity and pulse width vary through a 40% range
SD2Strength-Duration 2Intensity and pulse width vary through a 70% range

The technical table documents these five patterns and their electrical behavior.

For the full electrical explanation—including how SD1 differs from SD2—read TENS Modes Explained: Burst, Normal, Modulation, SD1 & SD2.

What Do C, S, and A Mean in EMS Mode?

They are the three EMS patterns documented for the EV-805.

DisplayEMS modeChannel behavior
CConstantContinuous EMS output according to selected parameters
SSynchronousChannels contract together
AAlternateOutput alternates from one channel to the next

The manual adds two important timing rules:

Synchronous: The time must be long enough to contain ramp-up and ramp-down.

Alternate: On-time must contain both ramps, and off-time should be at least as long as on-time.

These are programming relationships, not universal treatment prescriptions. Condition-specific EMS parameters should come from the current instructions or an appropriate healthcare professional.

Can the EV-805 Run TENS and EMS at the Same Time?

No.

Although the EV-805 contains both modalities, the supplied instructions state that the unit operates in TENS mode or EMS mode, not both simultaneously.

The two timers do not change this.

You can assign Channels 1–2 and Channels 3–4 different treatment durations, but the timer groups are not intended to make one pair TENS while the other pair operates EMS.

Why Can't I Change a Setting?

The controls available depend on the selected mode.

  • Pulse rate
  • Pulse width
  • Treatment time
  • EMS ramp
  • EMS on time
  • EMS off time

Not every parameter has the same function in every mode.

If you are trying to change a parameter that is being automatically controlled by a selected preset or stimulation pattern, confirm the mode before assuming the keypad has failed.

For detailed current specifications, use the EV-805 product page.

How Do I Know Whether a Lead Wire or Electrode Is Causing the Problem?

Use a known-acceptable component to isolate the failure.

For example:

Working Channel 1 + suspect pad pair

If the problem appears after installing the suspect pads on a previously working setup, the pads become the likely cause.

Then reverse the test:

Known-good pads + suspect lead wire

If the problem follows the lead wire, inspect or replace the lead rather than the pads.

Always shut the unit off before reconnecting leads or electrodes.

This troubleshooting method is particularly valuable on a four-channel device because there are more individual leads and pad pairs than on a conventional two-channel stimulator.

When Should EV-805 Electrode Pads Be Replaced?

The manual instructs replacement when the pads no longer adhere or show cracks or blemishes.

In practical troubleshooting, replace a pad when:

  • It will not maintain full skin contact.
  • The backing or connector is damaged.
  • Output repeatedly becomes intermittent when that pad is used.
  • Stimulation becomes concentrated or uncomfortable because part of the pad is lifting.
  • The electrode instructions indicate that its usable life has ended.

For a complete electrode-selection discussion, use the TENS Electrode Guides.

Balego TENS/NMES/FES Electrodes are available for replacement pads. Compatibility should be confirmed by connector style and device instructions rather than assuming every TENS pad fits every stimulator.

Should I Add Electrode Gel to iStim EV-805 Pads?

For the current iStim pad system, the manufacturer specifically states not to use extra electrode gel.

This topic is another area where old instructions should not automatically be applied to new accessories. The uploaded older manual contains its own electrode-care procedure for the pads supplied with that configuration.

The safest rule is:

Follow the care instructions for the exact electrode you are using rather than combining maintenance instructions from different pad generations.

How Should I Clean the EV-805?

For the device described in the supplied manual, routine cleaning uses a soft cloth that may be slightly moistened. The instructions warn against aggressive cleaners, stiff brushes, and allowing water inside the housing. The unit should be completely dry before further use.

Do not immerse the stimulator.

Do not attempt to clean an electrical contact problem by introducing liquid into the output socket.

How Do I Reset the EV-805?

The supplied manual does not document a factory-reset procedure.

If the device appears unresponsive:

  1. Reduce all output intensities.
  2. Turn the unit off.
  3. Restore or verify the correct power source.
  4. Inspect pads and lead connections.
  5. Restart the unit according to its matching instructions.

Do not disassemble the housing in an attempt to reset it.

If a reproducible control problem remains after external troubleshooting, contact Balego or the manufacturer rather than attempting internal service.

Can I Use the Rechargeable EV-805 While It Is Charging?

Do not assume that a rechargeable electrotherapy unit can be operated while connected to charging equipment.

For the current rechargeable EV-805, follow the instructions packaged with that model. Unless those instructions expressly permit treatment while charging, disconnect the charging equipment before use.

The uploaded AA-battery manual is not the correct authority for charging the current lithium-powered model.

What If My EV-805 Turns Off Whenever a Pad Lifts?

Treat poor electrode contact as the problem rather than repeatedly restarting the stimulator.

A partially detached pad can create the following:

  • Intermittent output
  • Uneven current distribution
  • Sharp sensation
  • Apparent channel failure

Clean and dry the skin, inspect the pad, and replace worn electrodes.

The manufacturer's original EV-805 troubleshooting table likewise lists worn, dirty, or improperly applied electrodes among the causes of premature shutdown.

Why Does Four-Channel Troubleshooting Differ From a Two-Channel TENS/EMS Unit?

Four channels increase coverage, but they also create more independent connections to inspect.

Compare the EV-805 four-channel unit with the iStim EV-804 two-channel TENS/EMS unit:

Troubleshooting factorEV-805EV-804Why it matters
Output channels42EV-805 has twice as many independent outputs to check
Typical maximum standard electrode setup8 pads4 padsMore pads create more possible contact points
Independent intensity controls42A zero setting can affect just one EV-805 channel
TENS + EMSYesYesBoth require confirming the selected modality
Current retail powerRechargeable lithiumRechargeable lithiumBoth current versions use rechargeable power
Treatment timingTwo EV-805 channel-group timersSingle two-channel treatment workflowEV-805 users must check both CH1–2 and CH3–4 timing

This does not make the EV-805 harder to repair. It simply means that troubleshooting should be done one channel at a time rather than treating all connected pads as one system.

Is the EV-805 broken, or is it a setup problem?

Please consider using this final decision sequence.

If there is no power

Verify the correct battery/charging instructions for your exact EV-805 version.

If there is power but no stimulation

If there is power but no stimulation, verify the active channel intensity, complete electrode pair, and lead connection.

If only one channel fails

Move known-good pads and leads, one component at a time, to isolate the failure.

If output is weak or uncomfortable

Inspect pad-to-skin contact before increasing intensity.

If output stops at a predictable time

Check the CH1–2 and CH3–4 timers.

If TENS feels different from EMS

Confirm that the selected modality matches the intended sensory or muscle-contraction response.

If the device repeatedly fails with known-good external components

Please stop using it and contact support.

When Should I Stop Troubleshooting and Stop Using the EV-805?

Troubleshooting should not override the device's safety instructions.

The supplied manual says not to use the stimulator with a cardiac pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, or other implanted electronic device. It also warns against stimulation around the head or neck, across the chest, and over broken, infected, or inflamed skin.

Stop the session rather than continuing to experiment with settings if you experience:

  • Burning or significant pain
  • Persistent skin irritation
  • Dizziness or faintness
  • An uncontrolled or painful contraction
  • Unexpected symptoms
  • A damaged lead, electrode, housing or charging component

Do not increase intensity to compensate for a suspected hardware or electrode problem.

EV-805 Troubleshooting FAQ

Why is my iStim EV-805 not working, even though the screen is on?

Check the intensity of the specific channel being used, lead-wire connection, complete electrode pair, and pad-to-skin contact. The older manufacturer's troubleshooting guide also identifies low battery and electrode problems as potential causes of a normal display with no output.

Why is my EV-805 stimulation suddenly weaker?

Inspect the electrodes and their skin contact before increasing intensity. Worn, contaminated, or partially lifted pads can change how stimulation is delivered.

Why does only one EV-805 channel work?

Because every channel has its own intensity and external connection, a single lead wire or electrode pair can fail while the rest of the unit continues operating. Turn the device off and isolate the pads, lead, and output component one at a time.

Why does my EV-805 shut off after a certain number of minutes?

The treatment timer may have expired. Remember that the EV-805 has separate timer groups for Channels 1–2 and Channels 3–4.

Can I run TENS on Channels 1–2 and EMS on Channels 3–4?

No. The EV-805 is a combination device, but the supplied instructions specify operation in TENS or EMS rather than both simultaneously.

Why does my EV-805 manual say to use AA batteries?

The current EV-805 is a rechargeable lithium-powered configuration. Match the instructions to the physical device rather than assuming every EV-805 manual describes the same revision.

Can I use any replacement TENS pad with the EV-805?

Do not assume compatibility based only on appearance. Please confirm the lead-wire connector, pad specifications, and device instructions. See our TENS Electrode Guides for help identifying electrode connections.

Should I add electrode gel if the EV-805 pads feel dry?

The current iStim instructions say not to add extra electrode gel to its supplied pads. Follow the instructions for the exact electrode generation you are using.

What is the difference between TENS and EMS on the EV-805?

TENS is intended primarily for sensory-level stimulation associated with temporary pain relief, while EMS is intended to stimulate healthy muscles and produce a controlled muscular response. Read TENS vs. NMES for the complete comparison.

Is there a factory reset for the EV-805?

No factory-reset procedure is documented in the supplied instruction manual. If ordinary power, electrode, lead, and setup troubleshooting do not resolve the problem, contact technical support rather than opening the device.

Safety and medical-information notice: This troubleshooting guide is intended to help identify operating, connection and accessory problems. It does not replace the instructions supplied with the exact EV-805 version, a clinician-directed treatment plan or professional medical advice. Do not continue treatment when stimulation causes pain, burning, significant skin irritation or another unusual response. Device use, electrode placement and contraindications should follow the current manufacturer labeling for the unit in hand.
