Understanding the three NMES modes

Synchronous mode

Synchronous mode activates Channels 1 and 2 at the same time. Both channels follow the programmed ramp, contraction, and relaxation cycle.

This mode can support bilateral bilatcontraction,red-muscle setups when both electrode pairs are intended to contract together. The manual requires the contraction time to be long enough to accommodate both ramp-up and ramp-down periods.

Constant mode

Constant mode delivers continuous pulses through both active channels using the selected pulse frequency and pulse width.

In Constant mode:

  • Ramp cannot be adjusted.
  • Contraction time cannot be adjusted.
  • Relaxation time cannot be adjusted.
  • The output continues according to the pulse and treatment-timer settings.

This mode should not be described as a normal contraction-and-rest program because it does not provide the same automatic work/rest cycle as synchronous or alternate modes.

Alternate mode

Alternate mode activates one channel while the other is inactive, then switches between them. It can be useful when two muscles, opposing groups, or separate sides are intended to contract in sequence.

  • Contraction time to accommodate ramp-up and ramp-down.
  • Relaxation time to be at least as long as contraction time.

Replacement electrodes and lead wires

Basic setup workflow

These steps summarize device operation and should not replace the prescription or manual.

  3. Turn both channel controls fully off. The unit should be off before connecting or moving electrodes.

  5. Prepare the skin. Apply electrodes to clean, dry, intact skin at the locations identified by the practitioner.
  6. Select the mode and parameters. Program these before raising channel intensity.
  7. Increase intensity gradually. NMES normally seeks a visible or palpable contraction, but the prescribed intensity and patient tolerance should control.
  8. Monitor electrode contact. Pads should remain flat and separate throughout stimulation.
  9. Turn both intensities off when finished. Disconnect by holding the insulated plug rather than pulling the cord.
  10. Return reusable electrodes to their liners. Store the device and accessories in the carrying case.
