ECG electrodes have separate limits for unopened storage, unused stock after opening, and use on a patient. The printed expiration date does not tell you how long an opened pouch can remain in service. An opened-pouch allowance does not tell you how long an electrode can stay on the skin.
We recommend recording these details separately for each approved product. Start with the exact manufacturer order code and the instructions supplied with your stock; similar-looking electrodes can have different requirements.

How to label an opened ECG electrode pouch
Use a consistent label so staff can identify the product and assess its status without reconstructing when it was opened.

Keep the original labeling readable. Do not restart the opening date when a pouch is closed again, moved to another room, or placed in a storage bin. Avoid combining loose electrodes from different lots or opening dates.
For unused inventory, do not extend use beyond the printed expiration because an opened-pouch calculation produces a later date. If the opening date or storage history is unknown, set the stock aside until its suitability can be established through your facility’s process.
How should unused ECG electrodes be stored?
Leave sealed inner pouches unopened until needed. Follow the specified temperature range and packaging directions rather than choosing a universal storage temperature for every ECG electrode.
For Red Dot 2560 specifically, the manufacturer directs users to retain unused electrodes in the opened pouch and not use electrodes with dry or displaced gel. Those instructions are model-specific. See the manufacturer’s handling precautions.
As an inventory routine, place stock with the earliest applicable discard date where staff will use it first. Check opened supplies on carts and in infrequently used rooms as well as the main storeroom. A recent delivery does not resolve an older pouch’s uncertain opening history.
When should an electrode already on a patient be replaced?
Use the exact electrode’s instructions and the responsible clinical team’s monitoring protocol. For Red Dot 2560, the instructions call for periodic site assessment and replacement if adhesion is no longer firm. Its tested five-day wear period does not eliminate those checks. Keep patient application and replacement records separate from the pouch-opening record. A newly applied electrode may come from a previously opened, still-usable pouch; those two events have different dates and purposes.
