BioStim® M7 Digital TENS Unit | 7 Modes & Strength Duration
The BioMedical Life Systems BioStim® M7 is a prescription, dual-channel digital TENS unit designed for users and clinicians who want substantially more programming control than a basic preset TENS device.
Its defining feature is a seven-mode stimulation system that combines conventional continuous and modulation programs with two strength duration modes—SD1 and SD2. The M7 also incorporates a patient lock, treatment compliance meter, adjustable timer, two independent output channels, and manually adjustable pulse rate and pulse width.
With a pulse-rate range of 1–200 Hz, pulse width of 10–250 microseconds, and output up to 98 mA, the M7 offers a broad adjustment range in a compact portable format.

Seven TENS Modes in One Device
The M7 provides considerably more mode-level control than a simple fixed-program TENS unit.
| Mode | What the M7 changes |
|---|---|
| Continuous | Maintains the selected pulse-rate and pulse-width settings |
| Rate Modulation | Automatically varies pulse rate |
| Width Modulation | Automatically varies pulse width |
| Rate + Width Modulation | Varies both pulse rate and pulse width |
| Strength Duration 1 — SD1 | Alters pulse width, pulse rate, and amplitude together over a repeating cycle |
| Strength Duration 2 — SD2 | Uses a larger programmed variation in rate and width than SD1 |
| Cycled Burst | Delivers stimulation in repeating on/off bursts |
SD1 raises pulse width while reducing pulse rate and amplitude, while SD2 uses a larger variation in those parameters.
For a broader explanation of how Normal, Burst, Modulation, SD1, and SD2 differ across TENS devices, see our TENS Modes Explained guide rather than duplicating that educational material here.
What Makes Strength Duration Different?
Most modulation programs vary one or two stimulation parameters automatically. The BioStim M7's Strength Duration modes simultaneously change pulse width, pulse rate, and amplitude.
That matters because the resulting sensation changes more dynamically than it does with a simple continuous program. SD1 uses a smaller programmed shift, while SD2 creates a larger change in pulse rate and pulse width.
This feature is one of the main reasons to consider the M7 when a prescribing clinician specifically wants the BioStim Strength Duration programming architecture rather than an ordinary preset TENS device.
Patient Lock + Compliance Meter
The BioStim M7 is particularly well suited to clinician-directed home programs because the device can preserve prescribed settings and record treatment use.
The Patient Lock can prevent unintended changes to the programmed treatment. When the compliance function is reviewed, the clinician can check how long the device has been used under the prescribed setup. BMLS specifically identifies both functions on the current M7.
This is a meaningful distinction from consumer-oriented TENS devices, where the user simply chooses a program each time without clinician programming or usage tracking.
BioStim M7 vs. Other Electrotherapy Options
| Feature | BioStim M7 | Balego TENS Digital BAL820 | InTENSity Select Combo II |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main modality | TENS | TENS | TENS, NMES, IFC, Russian |
| Channels | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| U.S. status | Rx | OTC | Device-specific professional/guided use |
| Programming | 7 M7 modes | 5 user-facing TENS patterns | Multiple modality programs + custom settings |
| SD1 / SD2 | Yes. | Yes. | Different program architecture |
| Pulse rate | 1–200 Hz | Program dependent | Up to 150 Hz depending on modality |
| Pulse width | 10–250 µs | Program dependent | Mode-dependent |
| Patient compliance meter | Yes. | — | Yes. |
| Power | 2 AA batteries | 9V battery | Rechargeable lithium battery |
| Primary reason to choose | Prescription TENS with extensive manual control and clinician lock | Straightforward OTC TENS | Multiple electrotherapy modalities in one unit |
The M7 is therefore most relevant when the prescription calls specifically for TENS with broad parameter control, strength duration programming, and clinician-management features. Customers who simply need an OTC TENS device may not require the additional M7 functionality, while users who also require muscle stimulation or interferential current should compare a multi-modality device.
For a full explanation of the difference between sensory TENS and muscle-stimulation NMES, see our TENS vs. NMES guide.
Dual-Channel TENS
The BioStim M7 provides two independently adjustable stimulation channels.
One active channel uses one complete electrode pair. Using both channels allows four electrodes to be connected for a larger or second permitted treatment area, depending on the prescribed electrode-placement configuration.
Each channel's intensity can be adjusted separately.
What's Included With the BioStim M7?
The current BioMedical Life Systems kit includes:
- BioStim M7 digital TENS device
- Four reusable 2" × 2" electrodes
- BMLS Touch Proof lead wires
- Two AA batteries
- Zippered carrying pouch

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the BioStim M7?
The BioStim M7 is a portable, dual-channel digital TENS device manufactured by BioMedical Life Systems. It provides seven operating modes, adjustable pulse rate and pulse width, a treatment timer, patient lock, and compliance monitoring.
What is the maximum output?
BioMedical Life Systems currently lists output as 0–98 mA adjustable, measured across its specified test load.
What is the pulse-rate range?
1–200 Hz.
What is the pulse-width range?
10–250 microseconds.
What are the seven BioStim M7 modes?
Continuous, Rate Modulation, Width Modulation, Rate/Width Modulation, Strength Duration 1, Strength Duration 2, and Cycled Burst.
What are SD1 and SD2?
SD1 and SD2 are BioStim Strength Duration programs that automatically change pulse width, pulse rate, and amplitude over repeating cycles. SD2 makes larger programmed changes than SD1.
For more background, see our TENS Modes Explained: Burst, Normal, Modulation, SD1 & SD2.
Does the M7 have two channels?
Yes. Each channel has independently adjustable intensity.
Does it record usage?
Yes. The device includes a patient compliance meter intended for clinician-managed programs.
Can the settings be locked?
Yes. The Patient Lock can help preserve clinician-selected settings.
What batteries does the current M7 kit use?
Two AA batteries are included.
Is the BioStim M7 rechargeable?
The KBSM7 package is designed around replaceable AA batteries rather than an integrated rechargeable battery.
Is the BioStim M7 an NMES muscle stimulator?
No. KBSM7 is an FDA-listed TENS device for pain relief. Customers requiring deliberate motor-level muscle contraction should compare an NMES or TENS/NMES combination device instead.
Browse our TENS units, electrodes, and accessories, or read the TENS vs. NMES comparison.
What is the GTIN?
00857771003224.
What is the BioStim M7 SKU?
KBSM7.
Is the KBSM7 over-the-counter?
No. The FDA's device record identifies KBSM7 as prescription use and not OTC.
What warranty applies?
2-year limited warranty.
