BioStim® NMS2 Digital NMES Muscle Stimulator | KBNMS2
The BioMedical Life Systems BioStim® NMS2 is a prescription dual-channel neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES/EMS) device built for rehabilitation programs that require controlled muscle contraction, adjustable stimulation parameters, and clinician-managed home use.
Instead of limiting the user to a few fixed stimulation patterns, the NMS2 combines eight preprogrammed therapies with up to three custom programs. Pulse rate, pulse width, contraction timing, relaxation timing, ramp, and treatment duration can be adjusted to match the prescribed rehabilitation program.
Its output reaches 120 mA peak with pulse widths up to 400 microseconds, giving clinicians a broad programming range for motor-level stimulation. Two waveform choices—symmetrical and asymmetrical biphasic square—add another level of flexibility.

Why Choose the BioStim NMS2?
The NMS2 sits between a basic portable muscle stimulator and a larger clinical electrotherapy platform.
Its main advantage is programming flexibility. A clinician can establish a structured contraction-and-relaxation program, save custom parameters, and then use the patient-lock and compliance features to help maintain the prescribed setup during a home program.
| NMS2 feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 120 mA peak output | Provides substantial available motor-level stimulation |
| Up to 400 µs pulse width | Broad range for motor-nerve recruitment |
| Two channels | Supports one or two electrode-pair configurations |
| Two biphasic waveforms | Gives the clinician a choice of stimulation characteristics |
| 8 fixed therapies | Faster setup for supported preset applications |
| 3 custom programs | Stores clinician-selected parameters |
| Adjustable ramp | Controls how gradually the contraction develops and releases |
| Adjustable work/rest timing | Supports repeated contraction-and-recovery cycles |
| Reciprocal mode | Allows channels to alternate |
| Compliance meter | Helps track prescribed device use |
| Patient lock | Helps protect programmed settings from unintended changes |
| AA battery operation | Portable for clinic-to-home programs |
The NMS2 is a digital NMES platform intended primarily for muscle contraction and rehabilitation.
Three Adjustable Stimulation Modes
Constant Mode
Constant mode delivers the selected pulse rate and pulse width continuously through the active channels.
Constant mode is capable of sensory-level pain relief, use similar to TENS. However, the NMS2 is FDA-listed primarily as a powered muscle stimulator, so Balego should position it first as an NMES device, not as a conventional TENS unit.
For a deeper explanation of how those treatment objectives differ, see our TENS vs. NMES: Differences, Uses & Device Guide.
Cycled Mode
Cycled mode activates the channels together according to the selected ramp, ON and OFF times. It is useful when the treatment plan calls for repeated contraction-and-rest cycles.
Reciprocal Mode
Reciprocal mode alternates stimulation between the two channels. This creates a different workflow from simultaneous contraction and can be useful when sequential muscle activation is prescribed.
The manufacturer specifies Constant, Cycled, and Reciprocal as the three adjustable operating modes.
Adjustable NMES Parameters
The BioStim NMS2 gives the clinician control over the major parameters that shape a neuromuscular stimulation session.
| Parameter | Adjustment range |
|---|---|
| Intensity | 0–120 mA peak |
| Pulse rate | 1–120 Hz |
| Pulse width | 50–400 µs |
| RAMP ON | 0–10 sec |
| RAMP OFF | 0–10 sec |
| Contraction / ON | 0–99 sec |
| Relaxation / OFF | 0–99 sec |
| Delay | 0–99 sec |
| Timer | Up to 99 min |
| Preset therapies | 8 |
| Stored custom programs | Up to 3 |
Electrical output specifications are measured across a 500-ohm resistance load.
For treatment-specific education rather than duplicating general NMES instructions on this product page, refer customers to our NMES Settings & Electrode Placement Guides.
120 mA Output and 400 µs Pulse Width
Maximum current alone does not determine how strongly an NMES device feels or how effectively it contracts a particular muscle.
The NMS2 combines up to 120 mA peak amplitude with an adjustable pulse width of 50–400 µs and pulse rate of 1–120 Hz. Electrode size, electrode placement, skin contact, waveform, pulse duration, anatomy, and user tolerance also affect the resulting contraction.
The goal of clinician-directed NMES is therefore not simply to reach a particular number on the display. It is to produce the prescribed muscle response safely and reproducibly.
Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical Biphasic Waveforms
The NMS2 provides two waveform choices:
| Waveform | NMS2 availability |
|---|---|
| Symmetrical biphasic square | Yes. |
| Asymmetrical biphasic square | Yes. |
Providing both waveforms allows the prescribing clinician to select the stimulation characteristics that best fit the treatment program rather than requiring every session to use one fixed waveform.
Patient Lock and Compliance Monitoring
The NMS2 incorporates a patient compliance meter designed for clinician-managed home programs.
When the locking feature is used, prescribed settings can be protected from unintended adjustment. The compliance system also records treatment usage so the clinician can review how long the device has been used.
This is an important distinction from lower-cost consumer stimulators that provide electrical output but little ability to maintain or review a prescribed program.
Clinical Applications
The NMS2 for clinician-directed NMES applications involving:
- muscle re-education;
- prevention or retardation of disuse atrophy;
- reduction of muscle spasm;
- maintenance or improvement of range of motion;
- increased local circulation; and
- selected postoperative muscle-stimulation applications.
Electrically elicited muscle contraction in connection with venous-thrombosis prevention. These are manufacturer-listed medical applications, not instructions for self-treatment, and the NMS2 is an Rx-only device.
For condition-specific educational material, use our NMES After Knee Surgery guide rather than reproducing treatment protocols on this product page.
BioStim NMS2 vs. Other NMES Options
| Device | Channels | Max. published NMES output | Pulse-width range | Programming style | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BioStim NMS2 | 2 | 120 mA | 50–400 µs | 8 presets + 3 custom programs | Higher-output programmable Rx NMES |
| Balego EMS Digital NMES | 2 | Device-specific | Adjustable | Fully adjustable dedicated NMES | Lower-cost dedicated NMES |
| Chattanooga Intelect NMES Digital 77717 | 2 | 80 mA @ 500Ω | 50–300 µs | Fully adjustable NMES | Chattanooga-branded dedicated Rx NMES |
| InTENSity Select Combo II | 2 | 100 mA TENS/NMES | NMES 200–400 µs | Presets + custom programming | TENS, NMES, IFC, and Russian in one rechargeable device |
The NMS2 stands out when the priority is a dedicated prescription muscle stimulator with 120 mA output, 400 µs maximum pulse width, multiple saved programs, and patient compliance monitoring. The other options may be a better fit when price, rechargeable power, or multiple stimulation modalities are more important.
What's Included?
The current BioMedical Life Systems kit includes:
- BioStim NMS2 device
- Four 2" × 2" reusable electrodes
- BMLS Touch Proof lead wires

Replacement Electrodes
Electrode condition is especially important during motor-level stimulation. Worn hydrogel, lifted edges, dirty skin, or poor pad contact can produce uncomfortable hot spots and inconsistent contractions.
For replacement pads, compare our TENS/NMES/FES reusable electrodes.
Confirm the electrode connector and lead-wire configuration before substituting pads or cables for the original BMLS components.
