Parker Laboratories Thermasonic® Gel Warmers provide controlled warming for ultrasound coupling media before application. The current U.S. 120 V product family ranges from a simple fixed-temperature single-bottle warmer to digitally controlled three-bottle and single-use packette systems.

The important purchasing decision is not simply “which gel warmer is best?” It is how much coupling medium your facility needs ready at once and how much temperature control you want.

We currently offer four U.S. configurations: 82-01, 82-03, 83-03, and 83-20. All can be used on a countertop or wall-mounted, and Parker provides a two-year limited warranty when the product is registered according to its instructions.

Which Thermasonic Gel Warmer Should I Choose?

Instructions confirm the 104°F fixed temperature on 82-01, the three 97/102/109°F settings on 82-03, and a one-degree 97–109°F adjustment on 83-03 and 83-20.

82-01: Best for a Single Treatment Room

The Thermasonic 82-01 is the simplest model in the lineup.

It holds one standard 8.5 oz ultrasound-gel bottle and warms the full bottle to approximately 104°F / 40°C. There is no user-adjustable temperature control and no separate power switch; Parker's operating guidance treats plugging the unit into the appropriate power source as normal operation.

This unit is the model I would choose for a clinic that wants:

• one bottle ready at a time;
• no temperature programming;
• minimal countertop footprint; or
• the lowest thermasonic acquisition cost.

Parker rates the 120 V model at only 12 W / 0.1 A and designs it for continuous operation.

82-03 vs. 83-03: What's the Difference?

Both units warm three bottles simultaneously. The major difference is how temperature is selected and displayed.

The 82-03 makes sense when low, medium, and high are sufficient.

The 83-03 is worth the additional cost when a facility wants a digital display and the ability to choose any whole-degree setting between 97°F and 109°F. It also remembers the last selected temperature after power is removed.

83-20: Warm Individual 20 g Ultrasound Gel Packettes

The 83-20 is fundamentally different from the bottle warmers.

It is designed to hold 20 single-use packettes measuring approximately 2.25 × 5.25 inches, with each packette containing 20 g of gel. Its LCD control allows adjustment from 97°F to 109°F in one-degree increments.

Parker's current IFU specifically states that use of the warmer does not affect the performance or viscosity of Aquasonic 100 or Aquasonic CLEAR single-use packettes.

How Long Does Thermasonic Take to Warm Ultrasound Gel?

For bottle models, Parker recommends allowing approximately two hours for a full bottle to reach the selected temperature.

The warmer can then remain in continuous operation so gel is available when needed. Parker also recommends keeping the cover closed to retain heat.

For 83-20, the entire unit takes approximately two hours to reach its set temperature, although the first packet at the bottom may reach the desired temperature in approximately one hour.

Does Warming Change the Ultrasound Gel?

Thermasonic use does not affect the performance or viscosity of Parker ultrasound gel under the manufacturer's intended operating conditions.

Aquasonic 100 Ultrasound Gel, Aquasonic CLEAR, SCAN Ultrasound Gel, and Polysonic Ultrasound Lotion are all compatible with Thermasonic.

Countertop or Wall Mount?

All four Thermasonic configurations are designed for upright countertop use and can also be wall-mounted.

The current Parker instructions include screws and wall anchors and provide mounting points on the rear of the warmer.

What Comes With the Three-Bottle Models?

Models 82-03 and 83-03 include three bottles of ultrasound couplant. Parker also maintains a registration program under which purchasers in the continental United States can select three complimentary bottles from Aquasonic 100, Aquasonic CLEAR, SCAN, Polysonic, or Polysonic with Aloe.

How should a Thermasonic warmer be cleaned?

Disconnect power and let the unit cool. Parker allows a soft damp cloth with mild detergent or an appropriate hospital-grade disinfectant. Do not immerse it or use isopropyl alcohol on the warmer.

Is warm gel always safe to apply immediately?

Always test a small amount before applying it to the patient. Parker specifically warns against using the 82-03 HIGH setting on infants, elderly patients, or patients with very sensitive skin.
