iStim X1 Wireless Heat TENS Unit with Remote Control
The iStim X1 Wireless Heat TENS Unit is a rechargeable, wearable device that combines transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation with selectable superficial heat. Unlike a conventional TENS machine with separate lead wires and a controller clipped to clothing, the X1 attaches directly to the treatment area using two proprietary self-adhering gel pads.
Use the wireless remote—or the buttons on the main unit—to adjust the TENS intensity and select low or high heat. The broad, flexible design is especially convenient for temporary relief of minor aches and discomfort involving the back, waist, shoulders, arms, or legs after exercise and everyday activities.
The current kit includes eight Japanese-gel electrode pads, a rechargeable remote control, charging equipment, and two storage boards.

The 15-level adjustment applies to the electrical stimulation, not the heat output. Heat has two choices: low and high.
What does “wireless TENS” mean?
The X1 does not require conventional lead wires running from a handheld controller to four separate electrodes. Instead:
- Two gel pads attach directly to conductive areas on the back of the X1.
- The complete device adheres to the treatment area.
- A wireless remote adjusts TENS intensity and heat.
- The main unit remains attached during the session.
This design reduces cable handling and makes the X1 easier to position beneath loose-fitting clothing. It is particularly useful when a user wants to treat one broad area without arranging multiple individual pads.

What condition is the iStim X1 intended to relieve?
The FDA-cleared intended use of the FT-810R platform is temporary relief of pain associated with sore and aching muscles in adults, involving the
- Shoulders
- Waist
- Back
- Arms
- Legs
The discomfort should be associated with strain from exercise or ordinary household activities. The superficial-heat function is intended for temporary relief of minor aches and pains.
| Example situation | How the X1 may fit |
|---|---|
| Lower-back muscle soreness after activity | A broad wireless surface can be placed beside, but not directly across, restricted anatomical areas |
| Shoulder-region muscle tension | Heat and sensory stimulation can be used together when placement is appropriate |
| Sore thigh or calf after exercise | A flexible design covers a relatively broad muscle area |
| Arm soreness from repetitive activity | The cordless design avoids dangling lead wires |
| Minor everyday muscle aches | Heat-only, TENS-only, or combined operation can be selected |
| Need for multiple separate placements | A conventional dual-channel TENS unit may offer greater flexibility |
The X1 is intended for temporary symptomatic relief. It does not diagnose the source of pain or correct an underlying injury.
How TENS and heat work together
TENS function
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation delivers electrical pulses through gel pads placed on the skin. The stimulation is intended to create a strong but comfortable tingling sensation in the treatment area.
TENS should not feel burning, sharply painful, or intolerable. More intensity does not automatically produce better relief.
Learn more about stimulation patterns in our guide to Normal, Burst, Modulation, SD1, and SD2 TENS modes.
Superficial heat function
The X1 provides two levels of localized warmth:
| Heat setting | Approximate maximum |
|---|---|
| Low | 41°C / 106°F |
| High | 43°C / 109°F |
Heat may be used alone or with TENS. Turn the heat off immediately if it feels excessively hot or uncomfortable. Users with impaired skin sensation, diabetes, neuropathy, or circulation concerns should consult a healthcare professional before using the heat feature.

How to use the iStim X1
1. Charge the unit and remote
Fully charge the X1 and its remote control before the first use. Use the supplied charging equipment.
Do not operate the X1 while it is connected to a charging source.
2. Prepare the skin
Wash and completely dry the selected treatment area. Remove:
- Lotion
- Skin oil
- Sweat
- Cosmetic products
- Topical analgesics
- Conductive gel
Clean, dry skin helps the pads adhere evenly and reduces the chance of concentrated or uncomfortable stimulation.
3. Attach the proprietary gel pads
Apply one X1 gel pad to each marked electrode area on the back of the device. Align the pad with the electrode profile and do not allow its edge to extend beyond the conductive area.
Do not apply extra electrode gel. The manufacturer specifically warns that additional gel can damage the pads and interfere with performance.
4. Place the device on the treatment area
Remove the protective liner and apply the complete X1 to intact skin. Press over the entire surface so that both pads make full contact.
Do not place the unit
- Across the chest
- Over the front or side of the neck
- Over the carotid arteries
- Directly over the head
- Over the mouth or throat
- Over broken or infected skin
- Over an area with reduced sensation
5. Turn on TENS
Press and hold the TENS control on the main unit. Begin at the lowest setting, then increase the intensity.
The desired feeling is pronounced but comfortable sensory stimulation—not pain, burning, or an aggressive muscle contraction.
6. Add heat when appropriate
Activate the heat feature and begin with Low. Allow time for the temperature to stabilize before deciding whether high is needed.
Heat is optional. The TENS function can continue without it.
7. Use the wireless remote
The remote can control the selected function and intensity without reaching beneath clothing or behind the back. Only adjust one step at a time.
8. Complete the session
The unit shuts off automatically after:
- 20 minutes in TENS-only mode
- 20 minutes with TENS and heat
- 10 minutes in heat-only mode
Wait at least 30 minutes between applications unless the current instructions or a healthcare professional directs otherwise.
9. Remove and store the pads
Turn the device off before removing it. Lift the unit carefully rather than pulling quickly from the skin.
Cover the pads with the supplied parking boards and store the components in a cool, dry place.
Proprietary X1 electrode pads
The X1 does not use the standard 2 mm pin-style electrodes found on most conventional TENS devices. Its two large pads adhere directly to the conductive underside of the wearable unit.
| Electrode characteristic | X1 requirement |
|---|---|
| Style | Direct-attachment proprietary gel pad |
| Approximate size | 61 × 89 mm |
| Number used per session | Two |
| Additional electrode gel | Do not use |
| Standard pin-style TENS pads | Not directly compatible |
| Replacement timing | When adhesion, cleanliness, or comfort declines |
Pad care and replacement
After treatment:
- Turn off the device.
- Remove it slowly from the skin.
- Reapply the storage boards.
- Keep the pads away from lint, hair, dust, lotion, and oil.
- Store them away from sunlight and excessive heat.
A slightly damp, lint-free cloth may be used to remove light contamination from the gel surface. Do not soak the pads or use alcohol, solvents, abrasive cleaners, or additional conductive gel.
Replace the pads when:
- The device no longer adheres securely
- Corners repeatedly lift
- Stimulation becomes concentrated or sharp
- The X1 beeps and turns off despite correct placement
- The gel is damaged or heavily contaminated
- Skin irritation develops
Poor adhesion can produce uneven current density and increase the possibility of discomfort or skin irritation.

- A pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, or another implanted electronic device
- An insulin pump
- A known serious heart-rhythm disorder
- Epilepsy or another seizure disorder
- An active malignancy
- A high fever
- Pregnancy
- A metallic implant in the proposed treatment area unless a healthcare professional has approved use
Do not apply the device:
- Across or near the heart
- Across the chest
- On the front or side of the neck
- Over the carotid arteries
- Over the skull, mouth, throat, or larynx
- Over genital areas

FAQs
Is the iStim X1 truly wireless?
Yes. The main unit attaches directly to its gel pads and does not use external electrode leads. A radio-frequency remote adjusts the device.
Is the X1 a TENS or EMS machine?
The X1 should be presented as a TENS and heat device. Its cleared intended use concerns temporary pain relief; it is not positioned for muscle strengthening or neuromuscular re-education.
For combined TENS and muscle stimulation, compare the iStim EV-804 Rechargeable TENS/EMS Unit.
Can TENS and heat operate simultaneously?
Yes. The FT-810R is designed to deliver electrical stimulation and superficial heat at the same time.
Can heat be used without TENS?
Yes. Heat-only operation is available and automatically ends after approximately 10 minutes.
How hot does the device become?
The technical documentation lists approximately 41°C, or 106°F, on Low and up to 43°C, or 109°F, on High. Actual perceived warmth varies with placement, skin condition, contact, and individual sensitivity.
Does it have 15 heat levels?
No. It has 15 electrical-stimulation intensity levels and two heat settings.
