For a standard resting 12-lead ECG, prepare a compatible ECG system, ten electrodes, the required lead set, appropriate patient-preparation supplies, and a working route for saving or printing the tracing. The twelve leads are electrical views; they do not require twelve disposable electrodes.
We recommend organizing the room around four tasks: preparing the patient, acquiring the recording, delivering the report, and resetting the space. The checklist below is for office supply planning; electrode placement and clinical decisions follow your trained staff’s protocol and the equipment instructions.
Core equipment and supplies
| Check | Item | What to confirm before appointments |
|---|---|---|
| ☐ | Resting ECG system and any required acquisition module | Ready for use under the manufacturer’s operating and maintenance instructions |
| ☐ | Patient cable and complete lead set | Correct accessories, readable identification, and no visible damage |
| ☐ | Required clips or adapters | All necessary parts present and approved for the system and electrodes |
| ☐ | Diagnostic electrodes | Correct model, usable condition, valid expiration, and sufficient quantity |
| ☐ | Patient couch or examination table | Supports the required position with appropriate access and privacy |
| ☐ | Gown, drape, and couch covering | Available for the office’s patient-comfort and turnover procedure |
| ☐ | Approved preparation supplies and dry gauze | Appropriate for the selected electrode and patient’s skin |
| ☐ | Hand hygiene supplies and appropriate PPE | Available under the office’s infection-prevention procedure |
| ☐ | Compatible cleaning and disinfection supplies | Suitable for the couch, device, and reusable accessories being processed |
| ☐ | Waste receptacle | Positioned for disposal under facility policy |
| ☐ | Paper or digital reporting supplies | Correct paper loaded when required, or the digital save/export route working |
Equipment checks belong alongside stock checks. For example, Welch Allyn’s resting ECG manual calls for inspection of cords and connectors before operation and provides separate instructions for patient preparation and equipment cleaning. Use the manual for your actual system rather than transferring one device’s cleaning method to another. See the manufacturer’s resting ECG manual.
Which electrode should be in the routine supply drawer?
Stock the electrode approved for your cardiograph and lead set. For offices using compatible diagnostic tabs, our Kendall listing offers two adhesive choices.
| Option | Supply role | Ordering reference |
|---|---|---|
| Our Kendall Q-Trace 5400 Blue | Routine diagnostic tab when that model meets the office’s protocol | 31433538- |
| Our Kendall 5500 Gold High Tack | Alternative when the clinical protocol calls for greater adhesive hold | 30807732- |
Both selections use a tab connection. Higher tack does not establish better diagnostic accuracy or compatibility with a different lead set. Keep the approved model clearly identified so restocking staff do not substitute by package color alone.
Our product listing supplies electrodes, not the ECG machine, cables, or clips. For a broader comparison of electrode categories, use our ECG/EKG electrode selection guide.
Which preparation supplies are conditional?
Keep these available when your protocol requires them, but do not treat every preparation product as necessary for every patient.
| Supply | When to include it | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Our 70% isopropyl alcohol prep pads | When the electrode instructions and patient assessment permit alcohol preparation | A skin-prep pad is not automatically an approved equipment disinfectant |
| Dry gauze | For the preparation and drying steps specified by the products used | Keep clean supplies separate from used materials. |
| Hair-removal supplies | When hair prevents the required electrode contact and the protocol calls for removal | Follow the specified method; hair removal is not a universal preliminary step. |
| Our Nuprep Skin Prep Gel | When an appropriate, approved preparation procedure calls for reducing skin impedance | An abrasive preparation product, not a gel to leave beneath the electrode |
Nuprep’s current instructions specify intact skin, caution against over-abrasion, and require removal of all Nuprep from cardiac electrode sites with dry gauze before applying electrodes. It should not be added automatically to every resting ECG setup. Read the manufacturer’s Nuprep instructions.
Pregelled diagnostic tabs already contain their conductive interface. Do not add a separate conductive gel unless the applicable instructions require it.
Prepare ten electrodes, with replacements accessible.
A standard setup uses four limb electrodes and six chest electrodes. Keep additional approved pads accessible for replacements without opening unnecessary packages in advance.
Count usable electrodes, not just containers labeled “pack.” Record the model and total quantity on the supply drawer or restocking sheet. The exact order quantity should reflect appointment volume, actual replacement consumption, and labeled storage limits.
Our diagnostic tab electrode page includes a 100-electrode selection for smaller replenishment orders. Check the available model and quantity together when ordering. Buying more at once is useful only if the stock will remain suitable until it is used.
Check the report workflow before the patient arrives.
An ECG can be recorded successfully while the office still encounters a printing or filing problem. Include the output route in the readiness check.
| Office workflow | Readiness check |
|---|---|
| Built-in ECG printer | Correct paper format for the exact machine and enough paper for planned use |
| Separate office printer | Required connection, paper, and toner or ink available |
| Digital filing or EHR transfer | Authorized access and the configured report destination are working. |
| Paper and digital output | Staff know which version becomes the patient record and how duplicate copies are handled. |
Confirm that the recording can be associated with the correct patient and routed to the responsible clinician. A supply checklist supports the office’s established review process; it does not determine whether a patient needs an ECG or how the tracing should be interpreted.
Between-patient reset checklist
We suggest assigning the reset to a named role rather than leaving it to the next person entering the room.
- ☐ Dispose of used single-use supplies under office policy.
- ☐ Process reusable equipment and patient-contact surfaces using their approved instructions, including required disinfectant contact time.
- ☐ Replace the couch covering and replenish patient-comfort supplies as needed.
- ☐ Check that clips, adapters, and lead wires are present and ready for the next setup.
- ☐ Return unused electrodes to the storage conditions specified for that product.
- ☐ Record shortages or damaged accessories for replacement.
- ☐ Confirm completion of the required report-save or transfer step.
This is a suggested room-management routine. Adapt it to the actual equipment and facility procedures.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a 12-lead ECG use ten electrodes?
The electrodes collect signals from four limb sites and six chest sites. The system derives twelve electrical views from those connections. “Lead” and “disposable electrode” therefore describe different things.
Do we need both standard and high-tack tabs?
Only if your clinical team has a reason to approve and stock both. A second adhesive option adds a separate item to identify and manage; it is not automatically necessary for every primary care office.
Is a bottle of ECG gel required with disposable tabs?
Not as a routine extra for the pregelled Kendall tabs described here. Stock and use any separate contact medium only when required by your approved electrode system.
Can a fully digital office omit ECG paper?
Yes, if its approved workflow does not require paper output or a paper backup. Confirm the system configuration and office contingency procedure before removing paper from the supply list.
What should we provide when requesting help with supplies?
Send the ECG machine model, lead-set details, approved electrode code, and quantity needed. A readable photograph of the existing package can help identify the item. Contact our product support team for help matching an ordering option.
