NuPrep belongs at the skin-preparation stage of a compatible recording procedure. Its abrasive action prepares the skin surface to help improve the electrode interface. Weaver lists applications including EEG, evoked potentials, ECG stress testing, cardiac rehabilitation monitoring, and cardiac catheter monitoring. Its product literature also identifies sleep testing.
Select it when the electrode instructions and your procedure call for abrasive preparation. Skin preparation is one part of obtaining a usable recording; NuPrep does not guarantee a particular impedance reading or eliminate every source of artifact.

Application points to check before use
Use NuPrep on intact skin and prepare the site gently. The manufacturer directs users to remove excess gel before placing non-disposable electrodes. For cardiac electrodes, remove all NuPrep with dry gauze before electrode placement.
Avoid eye contact and over-abrasion. Use much less pressure for neonates and geriatric patients, and add additional caution with skin sensitivities. Wash the product off immediately if an abnormal skin reaction appears. Do not use it on or near open wounds or compromised skin, or with current-inducing electrodes such as TENS or NMES electrodes. Remove neurodiagnostic materials from electrode sites before MRI.

Is NuPrep a conductive electrode gel?
NuPrep is more accurately described as a mild abrasive skin-preparation gel. Its purpose is to reduce impedance by preparing the skin before electrode placement. It should not automatically be substituted for a leave-on conductive gel, conductive paste, or electrode adhesive.

No. Current Weaver guidance limits topical use to intact skin and instructs users not to apply NuPrep on or near open wounds or compromised skin.
