For an EMPI setup that permits compatible pigtail electrodes, our first option to compare is Starburst Electrodes. Confirm the device’s electrode requirements, existing lead connection, and prescribed pad dimensions before choosing a replacement. Starburst is not an EMPI-branded pad or a universal replacement for every EMPI system.
If your old package identifies StimCare Premium, use our EMPI StimCare replacement reference to look up the original item. If you only have the stimulator and its cables, start with the identification steps below.
Identify the EMPI setup you are replacing.
“EMPI pads” can describe several different accessories. A loose adhesive electrode, a snap-connected pad, and an electrode used with a conductive garment require different replacement checks.
| What you have | What to identify | Ordering approach |
|---|---|---|
| Adhesive pad with a short attached pigtail | The socket at the end of the pad’s short wire and the matching lead pin | Compare pigtail electrodes only after checking the device’s permitted size and accessory requirements. |
| Pad that clicks onto a snap connector | Exact snap system and electrode reference | Find the specified snap replacement; a pigtail pad is not a direct connection match. |
| EMPI Elite system | Its specified snap electrode and cable arrangement | Check Elite-specific accessories instead of applying a generic EMPI compatibility claim. |
| Phoenix or another setup using a conductive garment | Garment model, electrode arrangement, and garment accessory reference | Verify the garment’s own requirements; loose-pad compatibility does not establish garment compatibility. |
| Working pads but a missing or damaged device cable | Full device model and both ends of the lead wire | Look for a model-compatible lead; an electrode package does not replace the cable. |
The legacy compatibility information distinguishes standard electrode sets from Easy Snap products and identifies garment accessories separately. The EMPI name alone is therefore insufficient to select a replacement.
Compare current pad options after confirming compatibility.
Once the required connection and dimensions are established, compare the features you want in the electrode itself.
| Our electrode option | Reason to consider it | What to verify before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Uni-Patch Starburst Electrodes | Silver current-distribution design and aloe hydrogel: our first comparison option for users seeking that combination | Select the appropriate size and confirm its pigtail connection against the existing lead and device instructions. |
| Balego TENS/NMES/FES Electrodes | USA-made reusable hydrogel pads in several sizes for everyday replacement purchasing | Confirm the required size and compatibility with the listed 2 mm pin/pigtail arrangement. |
| 696SS Superior Silver Blue Gel Electrodes | A 2 × 2-inch square option with silver/carbon construction and PolyHesive Blue Gel | Confirm that this size and pigtail format meet the requirements; a different gel does not guarantee freedom from irritation. |
These are comparison options for an appropriately verified setup. Shared dimensions or a plug that fits do not, by themselves, establish manufacturer approval for a substitution. Check the exact device instructions and obtain clarification when the permitted accessory is unclear.
Current sizes, package quantities, and prices appear on the linked product pages. None of these listings should be interpreted as a promise that the electrode is identical to a discontinued EMPI product.
Is an EMPI cross-reference an exact replacement?
Not necessarily. A cross-reference can point to an alternative with a different footprint or package quantity.
For example, the manufacturer’s historical electrode cross-reference includes a 2 × 4-inch original pad mapped to a 2 × 3.5-inch alternative and a 2.75-inch round original mapped to a 2-inch round alternative. Those entries document an alternative recommendation; they do not describe identical dimensions.
Use the old part number to identify what you had, then check what the proposed replacement actually supplies. Keep the clinician’s placement and size requirements in the decision. Do not change electrode size simply because another pad appears in a replacement chart.
Our StimCare reference page carries the detailed legacy-number lookup. This guide helps you decide which replacement route to follow without requiring you to recognize every old EMPI code.
Do you need pads, lead wires, or both?
The electrode’s short pigtail belongs to the pad. The longer lead connects the electrode to the stimulator. Replacing one does not automatically replace the other.
If the existing lead is intact, approved for the unit, and compatible with the selected electrode, a pad-only order may be sufficient. If the cable is damaged or missing, identify it separately. Our EMPI replacement lead-wire listing provides its model-specific information and selling quantity; it should not be treated as a universal EMPI cable.
If you are moving accessories from an EMPI Select to a different stimulator, use our dedicated guide to EMPI Select pads and leads with the Balego NMES unit. That is a separate compatibility question from buying new pads for the EMPI device you already own.
Questions about EMPI replacement pads
Where can I buy replacement pads for an EMPI TENS unit?
We offer Starburst, our reusable hydrogel electrodes, and other electrotherapy pads for compatible setups. Start with the product comparison above, then select the required connector and size. For an unidentified pad or specialty system, contact our team before ordering.
Are Starburst pads original EMPI electrodes?
No. They are Uni-Patch Starburst electrodes. Their silver conductive design and aloe hydrogel make them an option to compare when those features are important, but they are sold under their own product identity.
Will any “universal” TENS pad work with EMPI Select or EMPI Continuum?
Do not rely on the word “universal.” Check the exact device, current cable, and pad specifications. Also distinguish an EMPI Continuum from a Chattanooga Continuum when reading accessory information; a shared product name does not establish that all parts are interchangeable.
Does a replacement-pad package include the wire that plugs into my EMPI device?
Our electrode packages are pad purchases. An attached electrode pigtail is not the same as a separate device lead. Review the selected listing’s contents and order a lead separately when one is needed.
Should I replace the whole EMPI unit when the pads stop sticking?
Loss of pad adhesion alone does not establish a failed stimulator. Replace worn electrodes as directed, and use our pads, lead wires, and device troubleshooting guide if the source of the problem is unclear. Do not increase output to compensate for poor contact.
What should I send if I cannot identify my old electrode?
Send the full device name from its label, any number remaining on the electrode package, and the pad dimensions. Include photographs of the pad connection and both ends of the lead. If it connects through a garment, include the garment label and connector too. An old order number can help identify a purchase, but the current physical setup still needs to match.
Choose the replacement for your actual setup.
Start with Starburst Electrodes when their construction, connection, and available dimensions fit your requirements. Use the StimCare lookup when you have an old EMPI electrode number, or ask us to help identify the accessory when the connection is uncertain.
Follow the device and electrode instructions for placement, use, and replacement. Turn the unit off before changing connections, and stop use if you experience burning, unusual pain, or significant skin irritation.
