Redux® Electrolyte Paste 67-05 – ECG, Short-Term Monitoring & Defibrillation
Redux Electrolyte Paste by Parker Laboratories is a water-based, abrasive, electrically conductive contact paste recommended for short-term patient monitoring, ECG/EKG procedures, and defibrillation.
Its conductive formulation helps establish electrical contact between intact skin and compatible electromedical electrodes, paddles, or other patient-contact components. The abrasive characteristic distinguishes Redux Paste from smoother, non-abrasive products such as Redux Electrolyte Gel.
Redux Paste is also bacteriostatic and water-soluble. It is supplied in a 142 g/5 oz tube under Parker Laboratories' product number 67-05. The product is nonsterile and intended only for external use on intact, unbroken skin.
Important: Use Redux Paste only when the instructions for the ECG system, monitoring electrode, defibrillator, paddle, or related electromedical equipment permit a separately applied conductive paste. Do not add it beneath a pre-gelled disposable electrode or multifunction defibrillation pad unless the equipment manufacturer specifically directs that use. Parker instructs users to follow the connected electromedical device’s instructions for application.

What is Redux Electrolyte Paste?
Redux Paste is a contact medium placed between intact skin and compatible electromedical equipment. It helps complete the electrical interface when the equipment requires a separately applied paste.
It does not generate, measure, or control the electrical signal or therapeutic energy. The connected ECG machine, patient monitor, or defibrillator controls those functions.
| Component | Role |
|---|---|
| Redux Paste | Provides a conductive skin-to-equipment interface |
| Electrode or paddle | Makes the equipment’s patient connection |
| ECG or monitoring system | Records the patient’s electrical signal |
| Defibrillator | Controls energy selection and delivery |
| Equipment instructions | Determine whether paste is needed and how it is applied |
What does “abrasive” mean?
Redux Paste is formulated with an abrasive characteristic, unlike the non-abrasive Redux Gel. The page should not interpret “abrasive” as permission to scrub the skin aggressively or use the product as a general-purpose exfoliant.
The appropriate amount, pressure, and technique depend on the connected device, electrode, clinical protocol, and patient’s skin condition. Redux Paste is limited to intact, unbroken skin.
It is also different from NuPrep Skin Prep Gel. NuPrep is a dedicated skin-preparation product used before compatible electrode placement. Redux Paste remains part of the conductive interface during an indicated procedure.
Bacteriostatic does not mean sterile
Parker identifies Redux Paste as both bacteriostatic and nonsterile. Therefore, the page should not claim or imply that the paste:
- Sterilizes skin
- Disinfects electrodes or paddles
- Creates a sterile field
- Prevents all bacterial growth
- Prevents procedure-related infection
- Is appropriate for broken skin
- Replaces infection-control procedures
Redux Paste has a bacteriostatic formulation. It is nonsterile and intended only for external use on intact, unbroken skin.
When Redux Paste may be appropriate:
| Workflow | Potential fit |
|---|---|
| Short-term patient monitoring | When the monitor and electrode instructions require a separate conductive paste |
| Routine ECG/EKG | When reusable or non-pregelled electrodes call for conductive paste |
| Defibrillation | When compatible reusable paddles or equipment specifically permit a separate paste |
| Multiuse diagnostic department | When short-term monitoring, ECG, and permitted defibrillation occur within the same facility |
| Equipment using integrated hydrogel | Usually no additional paste unless expressly directed |
Many contemporary ECG electrodes and multifunction defibrillation pads are already pre-gelled. Additional paste can interfere with adhesion or alter the intended interface, so it should not be added automatically. This follows the instruction to use Redux according to the connected equipment’s directions.

| Abrasive | Yes | No |
| Defibrillation | Yes, when permitted | No |
| Stays during procedure | Yes | Yes |
| Best fit | Cardiac and acute-care electromedical contact | Neurodiagnostic electrode placement |
Do not substitute Ten20 Conductive Paste for Redux Paste in a defibrillation workflow. Likewise, Redux Paste should not be an EEG cup-electrode adhesive.
For additional neurodiagnostic context, see our Ten20 vs. NuPrep: When to Use Each Product.
How to use Redux Electrolyte Paste
There is not one specified universal application amount because use depends on the connected electromedical equipment. The following product-page workflow stays within the manufacturer’s directions.
- Confirm equipment compatibility. Verify that the monitor, ECG electrode, defibrillator, or paddle system permits or requires a separate conductive paste.
- Inspect the tube. Do not use the product if the container is damaged or contamination is visible or suspected.
- Inspect the application site. Apply only to intact, unbroken skin.
- Avoid contaminating the tube. Do not let the dispensing tip touch the patient, staff, electrode, paddle, instrument, glove, or another surface.
- Apply according to the equipment instructions. Use only the amount and placement specified by the device manufacturer or facility procedure.
- Perform the procedure. Follow all ECG, monitoring, or defibrillator operating instructions.
- Remove remaining paste. Parker states that Redux can be removed with a moistened soft cloth.
- Close and store the tube. Protect the product from direct sunlight.
Defibrillation considerations
Redux Paste is indicated for defibrillation, but that does not mean it should be added to every defibrillator setup.
| Defibrillation system | General product-page guidance |
|---|---|
| Reusable paddles requiring conductive paste | Redux Paste may be appropriate when specifically permitted |
| Multifunction adhesive defibrillation pads | Do not add paste unless the pad and defibrillator instructions expressly direct it |
| Pre-gelled paddles or pads | An additional contact medium is generally unnecessary unless specified |
| Unknown equipment | Consult the equipment manual before using Redux Paste |
Defibrillation equipment controls energy delivery; Redux Paste only provides a conductive interface. Application amount, paddle placement, energy selection, charging, discharge, and safety procedures must follow the defibrillator manufacturer’s instructions.
Infection-control and tube handling
Redux Paste is sold in a multiuse tube. The manufacturer specifically instructs users not to let the tube tip contact patients, staff, or instruments.
Recommended handling language:
- Dispense without touching the treatment surface.
- Do not return unused paste to the tube.
- Replace the cap promptly.
- Discard the product if contamination is suspected.
- Follow the facility’s policy for nonsterile multiuse contact media.
- Do not use Redux Paste when a procedure requires sterile contact media.
- Do not apply it to broken or compromised skin.
