Chattanooga Hydrocollator Heating Units | E-1, SS-2, M-2 & M-4

Chattanooga® Hydrocollator® Heating Units are a centralized hot-water system that stores and heats reusable Hydrocollator Moist Heat HotPacs for physical therapy, rehabilitation, sports medicine, and other professional treatment environments.

Choose from four Balego configurations ranging from the compact E-1 stationary unit with four Standard HotPacs to the high-capacity M-4 mobile unit with 24 Standard HotPacs.

All four models use stainless-steel tanks, thermostatically controlled water heating, and 110–120 V electrical power. Chattanooga’s current U.S. specifications list a normal HotPac water-temperature range of 160–165°F (71–74°C).

The E-1 is the smallest option in this product family. It measures approximately 13 × 8 × 16 inches and comes with four standard HotPacs.

It is best suited for a treatment room or smaller practice where:

• Four Standard HotPacs provide enough ready inventory.
• Floor space is limited.
• A mobile tank is unnecessary.
• Staff can place the unit on an appropriate stable surface.
• The clinic wants the lowest-capacity entry into the professional Hydrocollator line.

The E-1 is stationary, so its placement deserves more consideration than simply finding available counter space. The manufacturer requires a smooth, level surface capable of supporting the filled weight, not merely the dry unit.

The SS-2 adds a floor-standing mobile chassis and eight included standard HotPacs while remaining considerably smaller than the M-4. It has an approximate operating capacity of 10 gallons and a footprint of 21 × 16 × 33 inches.

Choose the SS-2 when:

• Eight ready Standard HotPacs fit better than four HotPacs.
• Countertop space is unavailable.
• A floor-standing unit is preferred.
• The clinic wants casters for positioning an empty or safely prepared unit.
• M-2 or M-4 capacity would be unnecessary.

The mobile chassis should not be confused with permission to wheel around a tank full of 160°F water. Chattanooga specifically warns not to move a Hydrocollator while it is filled with heated water because tipping creates a burn hazard.

The M-2 is the middle choice for facilities that routinely use more HotPacs but do not require the footprint or 24-pack inventory of the M-4. Includes 12 Standard HotPacs and has dimensions of 27 × 16 × 33 inches.

The M-2 generally makes the most sense when:

• Several treatment tables share one heat station.
• Twelve included Standard HotPacs better match the daily turnover.
• Mobile floor placement is preferable to a stationary tank.
• The SS-2 would require excessive pack cycling.
• The M-4 would consume more floor space than the clinic needs.

The M-4 is the largest Hydrocollator in this four-model selector. 27-gallon approximate operating capacity, 35 × 20 × 33-inch dimensions, and 24 included standard hot packs.

It is designed for facilities where the limiting factor is less likely to be tank size and more likely to be the following:

• Number of concurrent treatment rooms
• Pack turnover throughout the day
• Available floor space
• Water capacity
• Filled equipment weight
• Startup planning

All four models are intended to keep compatible HotPacs in the same general temperature range. Buying a larger Hydrocollator does not mean receiving “hotter” therapy; it primarily means gaining more tank volume and HotPac capacity.

That means clinic selection can be approached as a throughput problem:

Actual capacity for mixed HotPac shapes will vary because a standard, neck contour, spinal, and oversize pack occupy different amounts of tank space. The included packs let a clinic start with a baseline standard HotPac inventory. Additional sizes—including Half Size, Spinal, Knee/Shoulder, Neck Contour, and Oversize—can be ordered from our Hydrocollator HotPac selection.

A Hydrocollator unit heats and stores the packs; it is not itself the patient-contact treatment surface.

A complete clinical workflow usually involves:

Do not apply a Hydrocollator HotPac directly to the skin, and continually monitor the skin during use.

That safety information is more useful here than duplicating a full moist-heat protocol already covered by associated HotPac literature.

For clinics needing only occasional hot/cold applications rather than a continuously maintained HotPac inventory, we also carry reusable hot and cold gel packs. These products solve a different workflow problem and should not be represented as identical to the Hydrocollator system.

The word "mobile" refers to the castered chassis on the SS-2, M-2, and M-4. It does not mean the unit should be transported around a clinic while filled with hot water.

The current U.S. models are rated at 110–120 V and 1000 W. They do not require a permanent water line, but they do require routine manual filling because evaporation lowers the water level during operation.

Before choosing the installation location, confirm:

• A properly grounded electrical outlet is available.
• The surface or floor is level.
• The installation area can tolerate incidental water exposure.
• The selected location can support the filled weight.
• Staff can access the tank safely for filling and drainage.
• The drain location and cleaning workflow are practical.
• Mobile units have enough surrounding clearance to service and clean them.

The manufacturer manual calls for a grounded outlet, level support, and adequate load capacity for the filled unit.

A Hydrocollator continuously loses water through evaporation. Chattanooga instructs users to monitor and replenish the water daily and to keep the HotPacs fully submerged. Allowing the water level to fall below the packs can damage both the packs and the equipment.

A useful opening checklist is the following:

1. Inspect the tank and electrical cord.
2. Confirm that the water covers the HotPacs.
3. Verify that the unit has reached its prescribed operating range.
4. Inspect packs for deterioration or leaking filler.
5. Keep unsuitable metal objects and contaminants away from the tank.

Chattanooga recommends replacing HotPacs when the fabric or filling begins to deteriorate.

Hydrocollator ownership involves more maintenance than simply adding water.

The manufacturer calls for the tank to be drained, cleaned, and inspected at least every two weeks, with more frequent cleaning potentially necessary in hard-water conditions. Water should be replenished daily.

Excessive chlorine can damage the stainless steel, prohibits bleach/high-chlorine cleaners, and states that improper maintenance can void the warranty.

The Hydrocollator is designed to heat water and HotPacs. The manufacturer specifically warns that substances such as essential oils, herbal preparations, and other foreign additives can damage the HotPacs and heating unit and may void warranty coverage.

That point is worth including because it addresses a real ownership question without repeating generic heat-therapy information found elsewhere on Balego.

Warm-up is an equipment-planning specification, not a treatment time.

For a clinic that opens at 8:00 a.m., this means a large Hydrocollator should generally be thought of as equipment that is brought to operating condition as part of facility startup—not something switched on immediately before the first patient. Exact operational procedures should follow the current unit manual.

No. The current four units share the same specified 160–165°F operating range. The main advantages of a larger model are additional tank capacity and HotPac inventory, not a higher therapeutic temperature.

Hydrocollator water is much hotter than the temperature normally tolerated directly on human skin. Chattanooga notes that the tank operates around 160°F, while scalding can occur at far lower temperatures, and the manufacturer specifically prohibits applying a HotPac directly against the skin.

Use appropriate insulation such as a compatible Hydrocollator All-Terry Cover, follow the current HotPac instructions, and monitor the treatment area.

Warns against HotPac use over insensitive skin, poor circulation, cuts, abrasions, or wounds and instructs clinicians to exercise particular caution with people unable to communicate excessive heat.
