Uni-Patch™ Pre-Gelled Carbon Electrodes for High Heat and Humidity
Uni-Patch™ Pre-Gelled Carbon Stimulating Electrodes are reusable, self-adhering electrotherapy pads designed for compatible TENS, NMES, and FES devices. Their durable carbon-rubber construction and aggressive conductive gel make them a practical choice for application sites where ordinary electrode adhesion may be challenged by warmth, humidity, movement, or perspiration.
Unlike traditional non-gelled carbon rubber electrodes, these pads arrive with their conductive adhesive gel already applied. No separate electrode gel, tape patch, or retaining strap is normally required. Simply connect the compatible lead wire, place the electrode on clean and dry intact skin, and follow the stimulation device’s operating and placement instructions.
Each package contains four reusable electrodes. Choose the smaller Model 690 square for compact or targeted placements or the longer Model 668 rectangle when a broader electrode surface is preferred.
Cardinal Health describes the electrodes as durable carbon-rubber pads designed to maintain good adhesion at stressed application sites. Available distribution information identifies both models for compatible TENS, NMES, and FES use.

Available sizes
| Model | Manufacturer number | Size | Shape | Surface area | Practical fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Model 690 | EC89380 | 1.5" × 1.75" | Compact square | 2.63 sq. in. | Smaller treatment areas and more closely spaced placements |
| Model 668 | EC89350 | 1.75" × 4" | Rectangle | 7 sq. in. | Larger muscles and broader-area stimulation |
The rectangular Model 668 provides approximately 2.7 times the contact area of Model 690. That difference can affect placement flexibility, perceived current concentration, and the amount of skin covered by each electrode. The correct size must still be compatible with the device, body area, treatment plan, and clinician’s instructions.
Which electrode size should you choose?
Choose Model 690 when:
- A compact pad is easier to position.
- The treatment site has limited available space.
- Electrode pairs must be placed relatively close together.
- A smaller muscle or more targeted region is being treated.
- The existing treatment instructions specify approximately 1.5" × 1.75" pads.
Choose Model 668 when:
- Broader surface coverage is preferred.
- The electrodes will be placed over a larger muscle group.
- A long rectangular shape fits the treatment region better.
- A larger pad is specified in the treatment plan.
- The user finds smaller pads produce a sensation that feels too concentrated.
Electrode size can influence current density. With the same electrical output, a smaller contact area may feel more concentrated than a larger pad. Users should therefore begin at zero intensity and increase gradually whenever changing electrode size, placement, or product type.
For more selection guidance, read our guide to choosing TENS electrode sizes, shapes, and lead wires. Balego’s guide emphasizes matching the electrode to the treatment area, connector, comfort requirements, and device instructions.
What does “effective in high heat and humidity” mean?
These electrodes use a more aggressive adhesive gel than many standard reusable pads. The product is intended to maintain useful contact in environments or applications where heat, humidity, movement, or perspiration may make adhesion more difficult.
| Challenging condition | How the product may help |
|---|---|
| Warm treatment room | Aggressive gel is designed to resist premature edge lift |
| Humid climate | Adhesion is positioned for higher-humidity conditions |
| Athletic or rehabilitation environment | May be useful when warmth and movement challenge ordinary pads |
| Perspiration during activity | Stronger gel may help after the skin has been properly cleaned and dried |
| Curved or moving body area | Flexible carbon-rubber construction can follow ordinary body contours |
| Repeated home treatment | Reusable construction supports multiple sessions when correctly maintained |
The skin should still be clean and completely dry when the electrode is first applied. “High humidity” does not mean that a pad should be placed over wet, sweaty, oily, or lotion-covered skin.
The products are providing good adhesion to stressed application sites, while distributors specifically identify the Model 668 and Model 690 gels as effective for high-heat and high-humidity conditions.
Carbon-rubber construction explained
Carbon rubber serves as the conductive electrode body beneath the adhesive gel. It combines flexibility with electrical conductivity, allowing stimulation current to move across the electrode surface before passing through the conductive gel to the skin.
The pre-gelled design combines:
| Layer or component | Function |
|---|---|
| Carbon-rubber electrode | Conducts and distributes stimulation current |
| Conductive adhesive gel | Creates the skin interface and holds the pad in position |
| Pin-style connection | Connects the electrode to a compatible electrotherapy lead |
| Protective liner | Covers the adhesive gel between applications |
| Resealable package | Helps protect the gel from dirt and drying during storage |
Compatible electrotherapy applications
TENS
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation generally uses sensory-level stimulation for pain management support. These electrodes may be used with a compatible TENS unit when the lead-wire connector, pad size, device labeling, and placement instructions match.
Browse our full selection of TENS units, electrodes, and accessories.
NMES or EMS
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation is intended to activate motor nerves and produce a prescribed muscle response. The larger Model 668 may provide useful surface coverage for larger muscle groups, while Model 690 may fit more compact placement areas.

FES
Functional electrical stimulation uses electrical stimulation in conjunction with a functional movement or task. These electrodes are identified for FES use when they are compatible with the specific system and its clinical protocol.
The Model 668 and Model 690 families for TENS, NMES, and FES stimulation.
Lead-wire compatibility
These electrodes connect to compatible electrotherapy lead wires rather than attaching directly to a stimulator.
Before ordering, verify:
| Compatibility point | What to check |
|---|---|
| Electrode-side connection | The lead wire must have a compatible pin tip |
| Device-side connection | The opposite plug must fit the TENS, NMES, or FES device |
| Pin condition | The metal tip should be straight, clean, and undamaged |
| Lead-wire insulation | No cracks, exposed conductor, or intermittent connection |
| Electrode size | Device and treatment instructions permit the selected pad |
| Modality | The electrode is approved for the intended stimulation workflow |
These electrodes will not directly connect to:
- Snap-style cables
- Tab-style clip leads
- Wireless wearable TENS devices
- Magnetic electrode systems
- Garment electrodes without a compatible adapter
- Devices with permanently attached pads
Our 45-inch TENS/NMES replacement lead wires have standard pin-style electrode ends.
How to apply the electrodes
Always follow the instructions supplied with the TENS, NMES, or FES device.
1. Turn the stimulator off
Set both channels to zero and turn off the device before connecting, applying, repositioning, or removing any electrode.
2. Inspect the pads and lead wires
Do not use an electrode if:
- The gel is dry or contaminated.
- The carbon-rubber body is torn.
- The connector is loose.
- An edge is permanently curled.
- The conductive surface is exposed or damaged.
- The pad no longer adheres evenly.
Do not use a lead wire with damaged insulation, an exposed conductor, a bent pin, or an intermittent connection.
3. Prepare the skin
Apply only to clean, dry, intact skin.
Remove:
- Lotion
- Body oil
- Sweat
- Makeup
- Topical analgesics
- Loose skin debris
Although the gel is formulated for demanding conditions, starting with wet or oily skin can still reduce adhesion.
4. Connect the lead wire
Insert the compatible lead-wire pin fully into the electrode connection. Connect the pads before placing them on the patient whenever that sequence is recommended by the device instructions.
5. Remove the protective liner
Handle the electrode by the carbon-rubber edge or non-gel area. Avoid touching the adhesive surface more than necessary.
6. Apply the complete pad
Press the electrode evenly onto the selected site. The entire gel surface should contact the skin without the following:
- Lifted corners
- Wrinkles
- Air pockets
- Folded edges
- Hair trapped beneath the pad
7. Begin at zero
Turn on the stimulator and gradually increase the intensity according to the treatment plan. Stimulation should not feel sharp, burning, or concentrated beneath one edge.
8. Turn off before removal
Return the intensity to zero and turn off the device. Peel the electrode slowly from an edge instead of pulling on its connector or lead wire.
9. Return it to the liner
Place the electrode gel-side down on the original protective liner and return all four pads to their resealable package.
Should additional electrode gel be used?
Normally, no. These electrodes already have an integrated conductive adhesive gel.
Adding Spectra 360 electrode gel, lotion, water, or another conductive medium beneath a self-adhering pad may
- Reduce adhesion
- Cause the pad to slide
- Contaminate the existing gel
- Create uneven contact
- Shorten useful electrode life
Separate conductive gel is more appropriate for non-gelled carbon rubber electrodes. Our Spectra 360 guidance specifically distinguishes gel-requiring carbon electrodes from modern self-adhering hydrogel pads, which generally should not receive added gel unless their instructions permit it.
Electrode care and storage
Reusable electrode life varies with the following:
- Skin preparation
- Frequency of use
- Perspiration
- Environmental temperature
- Humidity
- Body oils
- Handling
- Storage
- Treatment intensity
- Body location
After each session:
- Turn off the stimulator.
- Disconnect the electrode carefully when needed.
- Remove the pad by its edge.
- Return it to its protective liner.
- Store all four pads in the original sealed pouch.
- Keep the gel surface away from dust, hair, lint, oil, and lotion.
- Store according to the package directions.
- Assign each set to one patient.
Do not:
- Wash or soak the pre-gelled electrode.
- Clean the adhesive with alcohol.
- Scrape the gel surface.
- Pull the pad by its connector.
- Share a reusable pad between patients.
- Leave the gel exposed to air between sessions.
- Cut the electrode into another shape.
“High heat and humidity” describes the electrode’s adhesion application, not the recommended storage environment. Follow the temperature and storage information on the current package.
When should the pads be replaced?
Replace the electrode when:
- It will not remain completely attached.
- Corners repeatedly lift.
- The gel is visibly dry.
- The gel is dirty or contaminated.
- Stimulation has become sharp or uneven.
- The connector has loosened.
- The carbon-rubber body is cracked or torn.
- Output becomes inconsistent.
- Skin irritation develops.
- The electrode was used by another person.
A strong adhesive cannot compensate for a damaged conductor, dried gel, contaminated surface, or worn connector.
