Heel Lifts for Sandals: Fit, Placement & Secure Support

by Service, Training and Support·October 16, 2026

Heel lifts can work in some sandals, but a discreet insert is not automatically a secure one. Check whether the sandal holds your foot, supports the entire lift, and still fits at the selected height. A loose insert in an open-backed shoe is not the same setup as a lift contained inside a closed shoe.

Our Clearly Adjustable® Heel Lift is a relevant option when a transparent appearance and small height adjustments matter. Our three-layer Balego Adjustable Heel Lift offers a different foam-and-suede construction, primarily for suitable closed footwear. Neither should be chosen solely because it can be made to fit beneath a heel.

Check two separate connections: the lift must remain in position on the footbed, and the sandal must remain secure on your foot. Adhesive can address the first problem; it cannot replace missing straps or correct unsuitable footwear.

This guide addresses footwear compatibility after the reason for a lift, the side, and the amount of elevation have been established. It is not a method for diagnosing a leg-length difference or choosing a treatment height.

Which sandals are worth assessing for a heel lift?

Start with the shoe rather than the adhesive. NHS footwear advice emphasizes secure fastenings, sufficient room, and a fit that stays on the heel. For sandal selection, use those principles as checks, not as approval of a particular brand or style.

Footwear typePotentially useful featureReason to pause
Back-strap sandal with a removable footbedAllows assessment beneath the original footbed, with adjustable retention. The footbed rocks, the straps no longer fit, or the heel sits above the area intended to contain it.
Back-strap sandal with a fixed footbedMay accommodate a product specifically permitted for direct-underfoot placement. The insert bridges a deep contour, curls against a rim or lacks a suitable securing method.
Slide or flip-flopOpen access makes the insert easy to see and inspect. There is no rear fastening; anchoring the lift does not keep the sandal attached to the foot.
Heeled or wedge sandalAdjustable straps may help with fitting. An existing slope, limited room, or forward sliding makes an additional lift difficult to accommodate.

These are fit-screening questions, not a universal ranking or a validated clinical assessment. A suitable closed shoe may be the better option.

Compare clear vinyl with a three-layer foam lift.

The relevant comparison is the construction and adjustment your fitting plan requires. A firm heel lift provides elevation; a soft heel cushion is not automatically an equivalent replacement.

These are product features, not proof that one lift produces better clinical results. The maximum available height is also not the maximum that every sandal can safely accommodate.

Does the lift go above or below the sandal footbed?

With a removable footbed

The clearly adjustable placement instructions normally put the lift beneath the existing insole or footbed, with the smooth side facing upward. Refit the original footbed and check that it remains properly seated. Do not assume a footbed that snaps into a shaped recess will still seat correctly after anything is added beneath it.

With a fixed footbed

The same instructions specifically permit Clearly Adjustable to sit directly beneath the foot in a fixed-footbed sandal, smooth side up. That exception applies to this product; it is not a blanket instruction for every heel lift. The exposed edges, support underneath, and retention still need checking.

Do not tear out a glued lining or flatten a molded contour to force a fit. Ask a qualified footwear professional about a suitable modification, or select different footwear. Our product-support team can help identify the lift and its published information; individualized correction and footwear suitability belong with your clinician or fitter.

Check the footprint and straps at the intended height.

Clearly Adjustable sizing guidance uses the interior heel area, not shoe size alone. Its sandal guidance favors a wider support platform. That does not mean everyone should automatically order large or leave an insert hanging over the sandal edge.

Compare the full lift outline with the space where it will sit. It should be supported without a curled edge, a rocking base, or an overhang. Keep the complete width chart with our clearly adjustable size options rather than transferring the size used in another shoe.

Then assess the assembled footwear. Can the straps fasten normally? Does the heel stay centered? Is there enough space above the foot? Does the foot slide forward or press against a strap? An insert that fits the empty sandal can still make the worn sandal unsuitable.

If the prescribed height creates those problems, do not simply remove layers to preserve the sandal or stack other pads around the lift. Have the footwear plan reassessed. NHS orthotics guidance explains why adequate depth and suitable footwear matter when accommodating an insert.

How do you stop a heel lift moving in a sandal?

Distinguish the vinyl layers adhering to one another from the completed lift attaching to the sandal. The brand's sandal guide discusses anchoring the lift; its behavior in an enclosed heel pocket does not establish retention on every open footbed.

For Clearly Adjustable, the heel-lift tape information specifies an adhesive formulated for PVC. Compatibility with the lift is only one check: confirm that the chosen attachment is also appropriate for the sandal lining and finish. We do not claim that a tape suitable for vinyl will bond reliably to every cork, fabric, or textured surface.

The manufacturer warns against carpet tape and contact cement that can degrade the vinyl. Do not transfer an adhesive recommendation for a different foam or leather product to this lift, and do not use household glue or adhesive applied to your skin as a substitute.

Do not improvise staples, tacks, or screws. Where permanent attachment is needed, have a qualified footwear professional select and carry out an appropriate method. A concealed fastener is not automatically safe, and the intended lift height must not be changed by an unapproved modification.

Pause when the fit changes

After fitting, use the introduction schedule given by your clinician or fitter. Recheck the setup when moving to another sandal, changing layers, or cleaning the insert. Stop using that combination if the lift shifts, an edge rubs, walking becomes unstable, or new pain, numbness, skin damage, or persistent pressure marks develop.

Do not rely on comfort alone when sensation or circulation is impaired. Seek individualized advice before fitting a lift if you have diabetes, reduced sensation, an existing wound, or a recent operation. NHS footwear guidance highlights the importance of fit for preventing foot wounds in people with diabetes.

A symptom also does not identify the right insert. Our plantar-fasciitis clinical guide explains why a heel lift is not automatically a plantar-fasciitis orthosis. That is clinical background, not a recommendation to treat heel pain by changing sandals.

Order for the actual footwear, not just the photograph

Record the sandal model, whether its footbed is removable, the usable heel area, and the lift height and side already selected for you. For a compatibility question, a photograph of the empty footbed and the proposed lift is more useful than a photograph showing only the sandal's exterior.

Both Clearly Adjustable and our three-layer foam lift are sold individually. Order for one or both shoes according to the fitting plan, not cosmetic symmetry. Confirm any tape, professional fitting, or additional footwear costs separately, and review our standard U.S. shipping information alongside the current product price.

Browse our heel lifts, wedges, and inserts for the available formats. A side-to-side wedge or cushioning insert is not a substitute simply because it also fits beneath the heel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a heel lift in flip-flops?

Do not assume a taped-in lift makes flip-flops suitable. The lift may stay attached while your foot still moves relative to the sandal. When the treatment requires secure foot positioning, ask about a back-fastened sandal or a suitable closed shoe instead.

Will a clear lift be invisible?

Transparent vinyl can be less noticeable, but visibility depends on the footbed, lighting, retained height, and exposed edges. A cosmetic advantage does not establish secure fit or clinical suitability.

Can I use it in Birkenstock-style contoured sandals?

Assess the exact model and footbed, not the brand name. Check whether the insert lies supported and whether the raised heel still fits the contour and straps. We have not verified universal compatibility with any sandal brand.

Can I swim or shower in it?

Washable does not mean the complete sandal-and-lift setup is approved for wet use. Follow the instructions for the lift, sandal, and attachment separately. Let components dry as directed, then reassess their condition and retention.

Can the sandal's built-in heel replace my prescribed lift?

Do not subtract the advertised heel height from a one-sided correction. Raising both shoes equally does not, by itself, correct a difference between sides. A wedge sandal also changes foot position; have your clinician or fitter assess the complete pair before changing the plan.

Should I move one lift between sandals and closed shoes?

Recheck every combination rather than assuming the same position and attachment will work. A separately fitted lift may be more practical, but it still needs the specified configuration. Do not change height merely because a different shoe feels roomier.
