About Clearly Adjustable® Heel Lift | 1mm–12mm Clear Orthopedic Shoe Lift
The Clearly Adjustable® Heel Lift is a firm, transparent shoe lift that lets you change heel elevation in 1mm increments from 1mm to 12mm.
Unlike a soft heel cushion, it is designed to provide a measurable amount of elevation without relying on compressible foam or gel. Peel away a layer to reduce the lift by 1mm; replace a layer when more elevation is needed. The clear vinyl can also be trimmed to fit individual shoes.
Sold individually. One quantity equals one heel lift, not a pair.

Which Size Clearly Adjustable Heel Lift Do I need?
Choose by the width of the shoe's heel pocket first—not solely by your normal shoe size.
Heel-pocket dimensions can vary considerably between athletic shoes, boots, dress shoes, and sandals even when the printed shoe size is the same.
| Size | Lift width | Approximate U.S. shoe fit |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 2-1/8" / 54mm | Up to women's 7½ or men's 6 |
| Medium | 2-3/8" / 60mm | Up to women's 10 or men's 8½ |
| Large | 2-3/4" / 70mm | Women's 10½+ or men's 9+; also commonly selected for sandals |
These shoe-size ranges are approximate. Recommends measuring across the inside heel area of the specific shoe and trimming the lift when necessary.
Small
Choose Small for narrow heel pockets, smaller shoes, or dress footwear where the rear of the shoe provides limited width.
Medium
Choose medium for many average adult shoes. It is the middle 60 mm width option and corresponds to the medium size currently sold on Amazon.
Large
Choose Large for wider heel pockets, larger footwear, many boots, or sandals where a wider support platform may improve stability. Clearly Adjustable specifically lists "Large" as the common sandal option.
How the 1mm Adjustment Works
The lift arrives at its maximum configuration. Each removable vinyl layer changes functional elevation by 1mm.
| Desired elevation | Adjustment concept |
|---|---|
| 12mm | Full-height lift |
| 9mm | Remove 3 mm of elevation |
| 6mm | Remove 6 mm of elevation |
| 3mm | Low-profile adjustment |
| 1mm | Minimum fine adjustment |
The useful measurement point is where the heel bone rests rather than the curved extreme rear edge of the lift.
That distinction is important when you are trying to reproduce a professionally specified lift height.
Why 1mm Adjustment Is Different From a 1/8-Inch Adjustable Lift
One-eighth inch equals approximately 3.2 mm. The Clearly Adjustable lift, therefore, provides much smaller height changes than a traditional 1/8-inch peel-away design.
| Feature | Clearly Adjustable Heel Lift | Balego Adjustable Heel Lift |
|---|---|---|
| Height adjustment | 1mm increments | Approx. 1/8" / 3.2mm increments |
| Available heights | 1–12mm | 1/8", 1/4", 3/8" |
| Material | Firm clear vinyl | Extra-firm foam + suede top |
| Number of height choices | Fine incremental adjustment | 3 discrete heights |
| Appearance | Transparent | Traditional insert |
| Sandals | Better visibility profile | Primarily closed footwear |
| Price priority | Precision-focused | Lower-cost option |
| Main buying reason | Millimeter-level fitting | Simple three-height adjustment |
The Balego Adjustable Heel Lift is the simpler choice when 1/8-inch increments are sufficient.
Choose Clearly Adjustable when the ability to fine-tune elevation by individual millimeters is worth the additional cost.
Clearly Adjustable Heel Lift vs. Heel Wedge
A heel lift and a heel wedge solve different mechanical fitting problems.
| Clearly Adjustable Heel Lift | Heel wedge | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary change | Raises the heel vertically | Tilts the heel side to side. |
| Main measurement | Millimeters of elevation | Degrees / amount of lateral wedging |
| Typical purpose | Controlled heel elevation | Varus/valgus-style wedging |
| Height adjustable | Yes, 1mm increments | Product-dependent |
| Professional customization | Can be trimmed/rearranged | Yes, depending on wedge |
If the goal is specifically inward or outward heel angulation rather than elevation, compare our heel wedges.
Clearly Adjustable can also be modified for side-to-side wedging, but the manufacturer recommends that this type of customization be performed with appropriate professional guidance.
Where Does the Clearly Adjustable Heel Lift Go?
For most closed shoes, place the lift under the existing insole or footbed, with the smooth surface facing the insole. Your foot then continues to contact the shoe's original cushioning surface.
Shoes with removable insoles
- Lift or remove the rear portion of the insole.
- Place the heel lift into the heel pocket.
- Replace the original insole over the lift.
- Confirm that the heel remains securely contained by the shoe.
Shoes with glued-in insoles
Carefully lifting the rear of the footbed if it can be done without damaging the shoe. If you cannot safely lift the insole, consider a shoe-repair professional instead.
Does the Lift Need Tape?
Usually, no tape is needed in a conventional low-heeled closed shoe.
The underside has a stair-stepped surface designed to grip the shoe's heel pocket. The manufacturer notes that adhesive may become useful with higher-heeled footwear or when a lift tends to creep forward.
Avoid improvised adhesives that may damage or soften the vinyl.
Can Clearly Adjustable Heel Lifts Be Used in Sandals?
Yes. One of this product's unusual advantages is the transparent vinyl, which is substantially less visible than a typical black, white, cork, or foam insert in open footwear.
For sandals, a wider lift is often needed because an open shoe does not provide the same heel-pocket sidewalls as a closed shoe.
The lift may need to be secured in open footwear.
Clearly Adjustable vs. Soft Heel Cushion
| Feature | Clearly Adjustable Heel Lift | Soft heel cushion / gel cup |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Measured heel elevation | Cushioning |
| Material behavior | Firm | Compressible |
| Height precision | 1mm increments | Usually not precise under load |
| Intended to raise heel | Yes | Sometimes incidentally |
| Designed for impact cushioning | No | Yes |
| Main purchasing question | “How much elevation?” | “How much cushioning?” |
Choose Clearly Adjustable when you need a lift. Choose a cushion when the primary goal is softness or impact cushioning.
Using a Heel Lift for Leg-Length Difference
A heel lift is sometimes used as part of professional management of a measured leg-length discrepancy. In that situation, the lift is generally placed beneath the insole on the shorter side at the height selected by the evaluating professional.
Do not estimate a significant leg-length discrepancy solely from symptoms, hip position, or how one leg appears while standing.
Professional evaluation before using a heel lift for a medical or gait-related correction.
One Lift or Two?
That depends on why the lift is being used.
| Reason for lift | Typical fitting question |
|---|---|
| Measured leg-length discrepancy | A lift may be prescribed on the shorter side |
| Bilateral heel elevation | Both shoes may require equal elevation |
| Achilles rehabilitation | Follow the clinician's bilateral/unilateral instructions |
| Shoe-fit adjustment | Depends on the individual shoe |
| Sports/prosthetic fitting | Follow the specific fitting plan |
The product itself is sold individually so one or two lifts can be ordered according to the fitting plan.
Shoe-Fit Guide
The correct prescribed height still has to fit safely inside the footwear.
| Shoe type | Practical consideration |
|---|---|
| Running / athletic shoe | Removable insoles usually make placement straightforward |
| Walking shoe | Check heel security after adding elevation |
| Dress shoe | Shallower heel pockets may limit usable lift height |
| Work boot | Greater shoe depth may accommodate more lift |
| Sandal | Clear material is less visible; wider lift may improve stability |
| High-heeled shoe | Existing shoe heel height and limited rear containment require extra care |
Higher lift settings occupy more vertical space inside the shoe. If the heel begins slipping out of the shoe or feels unstable, that shoe may not safely accommodate the selected amount of elevation.
Can the Lift Be Trimmed?
Yes.
Clearly adjustable vinyl can be trimmed with scissors or, when appropriate, a cutting blade to fit an unusually narrow heel pocket.
Trim for shoe fit, not to guess at a medical correction.
Cleaning and Reusing the Lift
The manufacturer recommends washing the lift with water and mild detergent. Individual layers can be separated for cleaning and restacked after drying. Washing also helps restore the self-adhering quality between the vinyl layers when dust, moisture, or foot powder has reduced adhesion.
Which Heel Lift Should You Choose?
| Your priority | Start with |
|---|---|
| 1mm precision from 1–12mm | Clearly Adjustable Heel Lift |
| Simple 1/8", 1/4", or 3/8" adjustment | Balego Adjustable Heel Lift |
| Side-to-side heel angulation | Heel Lifts, Wedges & Inserts |
Choose Clearly Adjustable when millimeter-level height control, firm noncompressible construction, clear appearance, and shoe-specific trimming matter more than simply purchasing the lowest-cost adjustable lift.

FAQs
How high can the Clearly Adjustable Heel Lift go?
The current Clearly Adjustable instructions specify a maximum functional elevation of approximately 12 mm, or just under 1/2 inch.
How much does each layer change the height?
Each adjustment layer changes the elevation by 1mm.
Is it foam?
No. It is made from firm clear vinyl. Amazon's current listing confusingly labels “Item Form” as foam in one attribute while separately identifying the material as vinyl; the manufacturer identifies the construction as clear multilayer vinyl.
Is one order a pair?
No. One quantity equals one lift. Order two when your specific fitting plan requires a lift in both shoes.
Which size should I order?
Measure the width of your shoe's heel pocket. Small is 54 mm wide, medium 60 mm, and large 70 mm. Shoe-size ranges are only secondary guidelines.
Can I move one lift between several shoes?
You can, but the lift works best when allowed to remain in one shoe because the vinyl gradually conforms to that shoe's heel pocket.
Can I put the lift directly under my foot?
For most closed footwear, the manufacturer recommends placing it beneath the existing insole or footbed, not directly against the foot.
Can I use it in athletic shoes?
Yes, when the lift is appropriate for the intended fitting plan. Athletic shoes with removable insoles are particularly straightforward to fit.
