Kendall™ Medi-Trace™ 200 Series Foam ECG/EKG Monitoring Electrodes
The Kendall Medi-Trace 200 Series is a compact, cost-effective adult ECG/EKG monitoring electrode designed for lower- to mid-acuity patient-care environments. Its smaller teardrop profile supports convenient placement when space is limited, while the flexible foam substrate conforms to body contours and helps repel fluids.
Each disposable electrode incorporates Cardinal Health’s proprietary conductive adhesive hydrogel. The gel provides adhesion and the conductive skin interface needed for reliable cardiac monitoring, so no separate ECG gel is required. A standard snap connector attaches to compatible patient-monitoring lead wires.
The 200 Series is commonly selected for general inpatient units, medical-surgical floors, observation units, outpatient monitoring areas, and other routine adult cardiac-monitoring applications. Cardinal Health classifies the family within its Value Choice collection.

The electrode itself remains part of the same 200 Series family. The best configuration depends primarily on lead setup, turnover, storage practices, and open-pouch workflow.
Why choose Medi-Trace 200 Series electrodes?
Compact footprint
At approximately 1.44 inches, the 200 Series is smaller than many general-purpose and stress-monitoring foam electrodes. The reduced footprint can be useful when several leads must be positioned on an adult torso or when available placement space is limited.
Fluid-resistant foam backing
The foam substrate helps repel fluids and conforms to ordinary body contours. This makes it practical for routine inpatient and observation workflows where the electrode must remain flat against the skin during general monitoring.
Conductive adhesive hydrogel
The integrated hydrogel provides the adhesive and conductive interface between the patient’s skin and ECG monitoring system. Cardinal Health describes it as supporting adhesion and clear, reliable tracings while avoiding messy residue.
Teardrop profile
The tapered portion of the electrode provides clinicians a defined area to grasp when removing the pad from its liner or lifting it from the patient. Handling the foam edge rather than the gel helps limit contamination of the conductive surface.
Multiple pouch sizes
The same electrode is offered in pouches of 3, 5, 30, or 100. This lets facilities align pouch quantity with their monitoring protocols without changing electrode type.

How to apply Medi-Trace 200 ECG electrodes
Follow the ECG monitor instructions and the facility’s skin-preparation and lead-placement procedures.
1. Confirm the correct electrode
Before opening the pouch, verify:
- Correct order code and pouch quantity
- Adult monitoring application
- Snap-lead compatibility
- Non-radiolucent construction is acceptable
- The package is within its expiration date
- Pouch is sealed and undamaged
2. Prepare the skin
Select the sites required by the monitoring protocol. The skin should generally be:
- Clean
- Dry
- Intact
- Free of lotion and body oil
- Free of excessive perspiration
- Prepared according to facility policy
Excessive hair may need to be clipped—not shaved—when facility procedures require improved electrode contact.
3. Connect the monitoring lead
The lead may be snapped to the electrode before or after application, depending on the facility’s workflow. Confirm that the snap is fully engaged.
Avoid twisting the snap after the pad has been applied, as this action can place unnecessary tension on the foam and skin.
4. Remove the pad from its liner
Hold the electrode by the foam edge or tapered portion. Avoid touching the conductive hydrogel.
5. Apply it evenly
Place the electrode at the selected monitoring site and press from the center outward.
Make sure there are no
- Folded edges
- Air gaps
- Contaminated gel areas
- Lifted sections
- Lead wires pulling against the pad
6. Confirm signal quality
Check for an appropriate tracing and absence of a lead-off warning.
When signal quality is poor, inspect:
- Skin preparation
- Pad adhesion
- Snap engagement
- Lead-wire condition
- Electrode position
- Patient movement
- Electrode age or dryness
7. Remove and discard
Disconnect the lead according to the monitor instructions. Lift the foam edge and peel the electrode back slowly.
Dispose of the used electrode according to facility policy. Do not reapply it to the same patient or use it on another patient.
Storage and pouch handling
- Store unopened cases according to the temperature and humidity directions printed on the current package.
- Keep pouches away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
- Retain unused electrodes in their original pouch.
- Close the pouch promptly after removing the needed quantity.
- Do not use an electrode that is dry, contaminated, damaged, or expired.
- Do not place a removed or used electrode back into the pouch.
- Follow the current label for open-pouch storage life rather than relying on a generalized electrode rule.
The Medi-Trace 200 hydrogel can remain fresh for up to 45 days after pouch opening, but the current package directions should control storage and disposal decisions.
