IOGEL® Disposable Iontophoresis Electrodes — 12 Treatment Kits
IOGEL Iontophoresis Electrodes are single-use drug-delivery electrode kits for professional iontophoresis treatments using a compatible external dose controller.
The elongated elliptical design helps clinicians position the active electrode along a tendon or other narrow treatment region. A clear adhesive border makes it easier to see the target site during placement, while the protected EZ Fill Window allows the GelSponge medication reservoir to be filled before the adhesive liner is removed.
IOGEL uses a silver/silver chloride conductive element designed to stabilize pH without a separate chemical buffer. Its GelSponge interface helps maintain complete contact between the medication reservoir and intact skin while providing a low-impedance conductive medium.
Each box contains 12 individually packaged treatment kits. Every kit includes:
| Included component | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Drug-delivery electrode | Holds the prescribed ionized medication or solution at the treatment site |
| Disposable dispersive electrode | Completes the electrical circuit |
| Alcohol prep | Cleans and prepares the two electrode sites |
Medication, a dose controller, controller lead wires, and any required snap adapters are not included.
Professional-use notice: Iontophoresis medication, polarity, current, total dose, treatment duration, and electrode placement must be determined by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional and used according to the medication, electrode, and dose-controller instructions.

IOGEL sizes and fill volumes
| Manufacturer number | Size | Fill volume | Approximate length | Package |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5000021 | Small | 1.5 cc | 1.5 in. | 12 kits/box |
| 5000022 | Medium | 2.5 cc | 2.5 in. | 12 kits/box |
| 5000023 | Large | 3.5 cc | 3.5 in. | 12 kits/box |
Which IOGEL size should you choose?
The appropriate size depends on the prescribed medication volume, treatment site dimensions, skin contour, and clinician’s intended current density and dosing plan.
| Clinical need | Potential size choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small or narrow treatment region | Small 1.5 cc | Compact active electrode and lower reservoir volume |
| General tendon or soft-tissue placement | Medium 2.5 cc | Midrange size and volume |
| Broader treatment site or greater solution volume | Large 3.5 cc | Largest IOGEL reservoir and adhesive footprint |
| Highly curved or irregular anatomy | Consider Trivarion electrodes | Form-fitting construction may adapt better to uneven anatomy |
| Butterfly-shaped placement needed | Consider Ionto4 electrodes | Includes a butterfly configuration |
| No external dose controller desired | Consider IontoPATCH or ACTIVApatch | Self-contained wearable patch format |
Do not select a larger electrode merely because it holds more medication. The prescribed dose, compatible solution volume, current, polarity, and treatment area must be considered together.
How IOGEL electrode technology works
Silver/silver chloride conductive element
IOGEL uses silver/silver chloride rather than a basic carbon-only conductor. Chattanooga states that this technology conducts more efficiently than carbon and helps stabilize pH without chemical buffers.
During direct-current iontophoresis, chemical changes can occur at the electrode interfaces. Proper pH control, complete contact, correct polarity, and appropriate current density are important for comfort and skin safety.
GelSponge interface
The GelSponge reservoir absorbs the prescribed solution and maintains contact between the medication and the skin. Chattanooga describes it as providing a conductive medium similar to ultrasound gel and helping create complete skin contact with low impedance.
EZ Fill Window
The EZ Fill Window allows the clinician to hydrate the drug reservoir while the adhesive remains protected. This can help reduce the following:
- Medication contacting the adhesive
- Premature sticking during preparation
- Contamination from unnecessary handling
- Leakage before the electrode is placed
- Loss of adhesion during setup
Clear elliptical adhesive
The clear adhesive helps the clinician see the target location, while the elongated profile is designed to follow the general direction of a tendon.

Choose Trivarion when:
- The treatment site is curved or irregular.
- A flexible, form-fitting electrode is a priority.
- A 2.0 cc butterfly option is useful.
- The clinic uses the ActivaDose II controller or another confirmed compatible system.
Choose Ionto4 when
- Square electrode geometry is preferred.

How to prepare and apply IOGEL electrodes
The following is a general overview. The current electrode instructions, controller manual, medication labeling, prescription, and facility procedure take priority.
1. Confirm the treatment order
Verify:
- Medication or solution
- Drug polarity
- Total dose in mA·min
- Treatment current
- Electrode size
- Active-electrode site
- Dispersive-electrode site
- Treatment duration
- Patient contraindications and precautions
2. Inspect the skin
Use only on intact skin. Do not place the electrodes over:
- Cuts
- Abrasions
- Razor nicks
- Active rashes
- Pimples or ingrown hairs
- Infected tissue
- Unhealed wounds
- Recent scar tissue unless specifically cleared
Our detailed Iontophoresis Electrode Directions for Use provides additional site preparation, polarity, dosing, and safety guidance.
3. Remove nearby jewelry
Remove jewelry or metal objects that could touch either electrode or lie in the current pathway.
4. Prepare both sites
Use the included alcohol prep according to the electrode instructions. Clean the active and dispersive sites and allow them to dry fully before application.
5. Fill the drug electrode away from the patient
Place the electrode on a flat working surface with the reservoir facing upward.
Open the EZ Fill Window and apply the prescribed volume of compatible water-soluble medication or solution evenly across the GelSponge.
Do not:
- Fill the electrode while it is on the patient.
- Leave dry areas in the sponge.
- Overfill the reservoir.
- Underfill the reservoir.
- Use a suspended or non-water-soluble preparation unless specifically permitted.
- Allow medication to spread onto the adhesive.
6. Apply the dispersive electrode first
Place the return or dispersive electrode at the prescribed site and press across its entire adhesive surface.
Avoid bony prominences with minimal soft tissue unless the clinician and product directions specifically permit the location.
7. Apply the drug-delivery electrode
Remove the protective liner and use the clear adhesive to align the GelSponge precisely over the target.
Press the adhesive border—not the filled reservoir—onto the skin. Pressing directly over the sponge can encourage leakage.
8. Connect the lead wires
Connect the drug and dispersive electrodes to the dose controller with the correct polarity.
For a negatively charged medication:
- Drug electrode: black or negative
- Dispersive electrode: red or positive
For a positively charged medication:
- Drug electrode: red or positive
- Dispersive electrode: black or negative
The polarity of the drug must be verified from the prescription, medication information, and clinical protocol. (Balego)
9. Deliver the prescribed treatment
Set the exact dose and current ordered for the patient. Monitor comfort, electrode contact, skin response, lead-wire security, and controller alerts.
Our current directions identify a 4 mA maximum and polarity-dependent maximum doses of 80 mA·min for negative-polarity delivery and 40 mA·min for positive-polarity delivery. The current product and controller instructions should always control. (Balego)
10. Remove and discard
After the controller completes its ramp-down:
- Turn off or disconnect the controller as directed.
- Remove the drug electrode slowly.
- Remove the dispersive electrode.
- Inspect both skin sites.
- Discard both electrodes and the used prep material.
- Document the dose, current, medication, placement, and skin response.
Safety information
Iontophoresis should not be used when the patient has a known adverse reaction to electrical current, an electrically sensitive implanted device such as a pacemaker, or a known sensitivity to the prescribed medication. It should not be applied over damaged skin, across the chest, transcranially, or in the orbital region.
| Safety concern | Recommended action |
|---|---|
| Pain or burning | Stop current immediately and inspect both electrode sites |
| Increasing stinging | Reduce or stop treatment according to clinical protocol |
| Medication leakage | Stop, dry the skin, and correct the electrode setup |
| Lifted adhesive edge | Stop and restore safe contact with a new kit if necessary |
| Controller reject alarm | Inspect lead connections, electrode contact, skin preparation, and movement |
| Excessive redness | Discontinue and assess the skin |
| Blistering or burn | Stop treatment and provide appropriate clinical evaluation |
| Known drug sensitivity | Do not administer the medication |
| Pacemaker or sensitive implant | Do not use unless specifically permitted under appropriate medical direction |
| Damaged pouch or electrode | Discard and use a new sealed kit |
| Previously used electrode | Do not reuse |
| Excess patient movement | Reposition and secure the setup; movement can disrupt contact and leads |
Temporary redness can occur under either electrode, but pain, intense burning, blistering, or progressive irritation is not an expected treatment goal and requires prompt assessment. (Balego)
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible cause | Recommended response |
|---|---|---|
| Medication leaks before placement | The reservoir was overfilled or pressed | Discard when contact or dosing integrity is uncertain; refill a new electrode correctly |
| Adhesive will not stick | Medication contacted adhesive or skin was not dry | Prepare a new dry site and use a fresh kit |
| GelSponge has dry spots | Insufficient or uneven filling | Hydrate evenly with the prescribed volume |
| Controller displays reject or high resistance | Poor skin contact, disconnected lead, dry reservoir, or contaminated connector | Stop and inspect the complete circuit |
| The patient feels a sharp sting | Edge lift, incomplete hydration, high current density, or skin defect | Stop immediately and inspect |
| Active electrode moves | Site contour, movement, or compromised adhesive | Do not tape or compress unless the IFU permits it; replace when secure contact cannot be maintained |
| No current flows | Incorrect lead connection, open circuit, or controller issue | Verify polarity, snaps, leads, electrode contact, and controller setup |
| Treatment takes longer than expected | Current has been reduced by the controller because of resistance | Inspect contact and follow device troubleshooting |
| Excessive redness under one pad | Contact or current density may be uneven | Discontinue and assess before further treatment |
