Iontophoresis Electrode Compatibility: Match Your Controller
Match the electrode to the controller you already own before comparing shapes or prices. For ActivaDose II, ActivaTek explicitly identifies Trivarion as compatible. Other proposed combinations need the same checks: the exact device, its permitted accessories, the lead connection at both ends, and the electrode's own instructions.
Our Trivarion delivery kits provide a purchasing route for that named pairing. Already using a different kit? Keep its label and lead-set reference available so a repeat order can be distinguished from a change of equipment.
This guide concerns disposable electrodes for an existing medication-iontophoresis controller. It is a documentation-based purchasing guide, not an independent compatibility certification or a treatment prescription. We supply the equipment; prescribed medication and treatment directions must be arranged separately.
From existing equipment to the correct order
Identify the controller → confirm the electrode and lead combination → check physical fit and fill requirements → compare complete-kit cost → select the exact product.
1. Start with the controller label and the evidence for the pairing.
A matching plug answers a mechanical question. It does not answer whether the device's instructions permit the electrode or whether the complete arrangement supports the intended treatment.
The table below separates a currently published named pairing from historical information and a combination that still needs clarification.

Not verified in this guide does not mean proven incompatible. It means the available information does not justify a blanket compatibility claim. Resolve that documentation gap rather than trying an uncertain combination on a patient.
What about Ionto4 with ActivaDose II?
The Ionto4 instructions require an FDA-cleared, constant-current iontophoresis device and tell users to follow the controller's manual. The document carries ActivaTek branding, and North Coast identifies the product as an ActivaTek Ionto4 kit.
That information should not be rewritten as “all constant-current electrodes fit ActivaDose II.” The ActivaDose II manual linked in our guide specifies ActivaTek electrodes; the reviewed Ionto4 leaflet does not list every supported controller model. Check the current kit, controller instructions, and lead set together, especially when changing from an established combination. Trivarion remains the explicitly named pairing in the manufacturer source above.
2. Identify the lead set separately from the electrode kit.
Record both connections: controller to cable and cable to electrode. A photograph of the electrode end alone can leave the most important cable-identification question unanswered. Retain the lead part number when available; descriptions such as "clip," "pin," or "snap" are not complete part references.
For example, North Coast lists an ActivaDose II replacement lead separately as NC89185-LW. That is a supplier ordering reference, not a promise that every similar-looking lead is interchangeable. Contact us to confirm the required accessory and availability rather than assuming a new electrode box contains it.
A physical adapter also needs documentation for the intended combination. Do not modify a cable or force a connection. For equipment checks, turn the controller off before attaching or removing leads; the Ionto4 instructions expressly require shutdown before lead attachment.
3. Compare electrode options by what still needs confirmation.
The products below are options in our catalog, not a universal compatibility list for every controller. Each product link leads to its configurations and current ordering information.

Keep the active and return electrodes together as the specified system. An electrode that attaches to the lead is not automatically an acceptable substitute for the kit's return pad.
4. Check physical fit and fill requirements before selecting a size.
Once the permitted pairing is established, confirm the exact configuration. “Medium” is not a standardized reservoir size: the published Ionto4 Medium NC89376 requires 2.5 mL, while Trivarion Medium NC89181B lists 2.0 mL. Do not transfer the old filling instruction because the replacement uses the same size name.

A legacy cross-reference is a starting point, not a copied prescription.
North Coast's EMPI cross-reference lists Trivarion Medium 2.0 mL as an alternative alongside Dupel B.L.U.E. Medium 2.5 mL. The table helps locate an option; it does not make their filling volumes identical. Have the clinical team review the new instructions when a reference or configuration changes.
Also distinguish current in mA, electrical charge in mA·min, and liquid volume in mL. Matching one number does not establish compatibility or equal absorbed medication. The treatment must meet the applicable controller, electrode, and medication requirements; a controller's maximum setting is not permission to exceed the electrode's limits.
5. Compare complete-kit costs, then confirm the product selection.
After compatibility and configuration are settled, compare the cost of one complete usable kit. A box containing 12 active electrodes and 12 matching return electrodes supplies 12 pairs—not 24 complete setups. A box of active electrodes alone is a different purchase.

Before checkout, match the selected SKU, shape, reservoir specification, and number of boxes to the approved purchasing record. A family-level starting price does not identify the variant in the cart. Do not treat a supplier's suggested alternative as authorization to change the treatment plan.
What to send us when the replacement is uncertain
A useful request identifies what is staying the same and what is changing. Include the controller manufacturer and model number, the lead reference or photographs of both ends, the current electrode label, and the proposed replacement. Product photographs are sufficient for identification; do not include patient-identifying information.

Send those details to our team. Keep the resulting controller, lead, and electrode references together in the purchasing file. Ask for proposed substitutions to be reviewed before shipment rather than accepting a change based solely on size name or price.
Common compatibility questions
Can TENS pads or ECG electrodes serve as the return electrode?
Do not use them as substitutes unless the iontophoresis system's instructions explicitly permit the exact product. Conductivity or a matching connection does not establish the required iontophoresis use. Purchase the specified return electrode with the active electrode.
Can I attach IontoPatch or ACTIVApatch to my controller?
These are self-powered patch formats, not wired replacement electrode pairs. Changing to one is a change of system to discuss with the treating clinician. Our IontoPatch and ACTIVApatch comparison addresses that separate selection.
Do I need a new controller if the new electrodes do not connect?
Not automatically. First identify whether the wrong electrode, cable, or adapter was ordered. If the equipment is damaged or operates abnormally, arrange the appropriate service assessment; do not test an uncertain connection on a patient.
Does a 12-kit box include medication or a new reusable lead?
Do not assume either is included. Read the selected kit's contents. The Trivarion system description expressly separates its disposable electrodes from the generator and lead wires. Medication and treatment directions are arranged separately.
Keep the approved combination attached to the order.
